he started trying it that way as a kid, since it's a great way to manage extra length when your belt is too big, if you cut it you need a new belt as you grow bigger and daud AI'nt got the money for that as a poor kid. But now he's so used to it that he always gets belts that are longer than he actually needs them to be but it also has Utility

And then overnight all the whalers acquire longer belts for using in a pinch because shit dude he's totally right

Belts dont leave as much blood as knives do! Maybe some clients request a death by strangulation too. And if you get captured, you're definitely gonna get your weapons taken from you, but unless your opponents are particularly thorough they'll leave you your belt. Also you can hogtie and kidnap someone with belts! Knives not so much
