Description:
There are regional/island differences between the shanties. The Drunken Whaler song is more violent in Dunwall but in Tyvia it's more practical like "put 'im in a longboat 'till he's sober" or in Serkonan crews there are actual verses that tell a story. Dunwall has more songs about whaling and Serkonos has more songs based around long voyages and trade. Tyvia's songs are like "barrett's privateers" and "leave her johnny" versus Morley's sailors leaning towards more aggressive and battle songs.
tbh i still feel like "fish in the sea" is an enormously fitting song for dh. "is this because it mentions eels and whales" maybe. also pique la baleine but thats just ome of my favs bc (a) it slaps and (b) its about whaling and (c) the lyrics are dishonored-style morbid.
the whalers. they have a "secret" band. thomas started it b/c he has a violin and got bored. Daud comes back early from a mission and walks into band practice in his office
Whalers doing sea shanties? Some whalers (in the vents or something) accidentally overhearing daud singing drunken whaler to himself and being like :o hey can we get him to join the band. They really love the "Drunken Whaler" song, both for the adequately creepy vibe and the coincidental name. Sometimes they sing it while running across rooftops or while tracking a target, when they feel like toying with their prey. When the whaler gang is dissolved after Daud leaves, they all get drunk and Wellerman is the last song they sing together
im sure any serkonos-born whalers have shared the songs we hear the grand guard and street performers sing
Daud's whalers are from all over the empire so whenever "Drunken Whaler" is sung it's just. a jumble of words until they all agree to have one (1) person lead while everyone else follows. One time Daud surprises everyone by singing a barely-known Pandyssian version.
Samuel refuses to sing any shanties around the Loyalists b/c Havelock rubs him the wrong way (rich person disease), but he teaches Emily a couple
Havelock can sing and he sings Well
I hc his dad was a whaler and taught him harpooner songs, so most of the shanties he knows when he goes into the Navy are related to whaling in some way. he's got a really strong voice and whew boy he can Project. his favorites are ofc Drunken Whaler, and whatever in-universe equivalent there is of Old Maui and Randy Dandy Oh
Also one of his friends is from Baleton, which I hc as French-speaking, and taught Havelock and his friend group Pique La Baleine. I also like to think that they also like to tell stories through song on ships and that The Mariner's Revenge Song exists in universe as one of those story songs, and that it's the favorite of said friend from Baleton. Friend from Baleton is the older dad friend of the group, and when he dies during the Insurrection, Havelock tells the story in his place
I also hc that Havelock came from a German-speaking family that originated in northern Gristol, so he'd know a few in German too
When he's younger and still a landsman, Havelock kind of lingers back a little - he's a 16 year old who hasn't quite grown into his own yet. But as the months drag on and he settles more into the life and gains some confidence, some of his peers are like, "Oh shit, lad can Sing". He comes home from his first years at sea not just stronger physically, but with a stronger voice
I hc that Martin is great singer also, imagine him humming a song from his days as a soldier and Havelock recognising the tune and singing it idly, yes love some musical loyalists
I like to hc that there are some songs that Morley and Gristol have in common, Drunken Whaler being among them, and it would be really cool if Havelock and Martin compared the versions from their homelands

"HEYYY WHAT DO YOU DO WITH A DRUNKEN--" *daud walks in and they all blink away*
Daud: sings the pandyssian version
The whalers:
"Daud you've been to pandyssia?" "yeah. who hasn't."
"You've been to Pandyssia??!?"
"What, like it's hard?"
"if that old fart Sokolov can do it, so can i"
