how come characters in the game keep talking about sokolov so favorably??? is it just because he was emily's teacher and she's being sentimental? in dh1 Sokolov was arguably as bad as Jindosh is in dh2 with all the experimenting he has done on civilians.
I guess in the eyes of many people in-universe Sokolov’s probably "redeemed himself" by making a cure for the plague but uh. looks at How he got there
I feel like there's an element of "do this for survival" in Sokolov that you don't have in Jindosh? At least in appearances. Sokolov always do stuff to ensure his own survival and comfort - he does stuff for Hiram to keep his privileges but then betrays him literally for a bottle of booze, he goes nyoom as soon as he realizes shit is going down at jess's assassination, he despises the nobility but puts up with them for clout and money. As for in-universe, great catastrophes like a plague are typically periods where you'll cut people some slack if they Do Crimes - much more than you'll do in peaceful times. Especially if the guy in question invents the cure for said plague.
Meanwhile Jindosh, in appearances at least, seems to do most of this for shits and giggles - he has the same reprehensible methods as Sokolov, but the objective is to create war machines while there is no real need for them - Sokolov at least had the excuse of exceptional circumstances
Sokolov is a pragmatist at heart, Jindosh just does shit for the hell of it.
I'm in no way excusing Sokolov - he has the moral backbone of a chocolate éclair - but it can explains how in-universe he was able to not get fucking dunked on for his crimes
"In his dreams, he sees the names and faces of every subject he experimented on in the name of progress."
sokolov remembers the name of every single test subject that died, according to the Heart in DH2. What he did was wrong and he knows and accepts that, and forces himself to live with that for the rest of his life. it's less of a "i'm doing the wrong thing" but rather a "yikes i did such wrong, but I cured the plague, was it worth it?"
There are quite a few about him being regretful
