headcanon that Daud can cook nurishing meals that ensure you don't get a stomach grumble in the middle of a mission. However it doesn't mean it tastes good. And his only way to hide the fact that it's seriously undercooked is to add enough spice to burn off your tastebuds.

His mom was a decent cook but he was kidnapped too young to learn how to make actual meals, all he remembers is "heat stuff, add seasoning" and then he experimented

Meanwhile at Whaler HQ, whenever Daud cooks half the Whalers run away because that is just Too Much Spice. Like even the Serkonan and Pandyssian Whalers admit that it's hard to eat and definitely not a good usage of spices. the reason the hwalers wear masks inside is just so they dont start crying from the chilli air

And Daud's cooking is known to be genuinely filling and will avoid all mid-mission munchies, but it just. Doesn't taste good. Not downright awful, but it's obvious you don't use that much spice unless you have something to hide. Fortunately most the Whalers aren't picky.
