lore headcanon thing: the abbey propagates autism as a curse by the outsider (hence "touched" by him) because, well, it's catholicism the abbey. it's also the 1800s.

my point is, when somebody says "it seems her daughter has been touched by the outsider", the common man starts to pity the parents for they have to raise "a freak". so basically: stigmatized as much as in real life
