To this day I wonder why on earth Jess nominated Hiram as Spymaster in the first place. jess appointed him as spymaster, 1830. What quality did he exhibit that made Jess willing to gloss over all of *gestures vaguely at Hiram*
probably because he seemed competent at first? he worked w/ euhorn and seemed reasonably competent so she let him keep his position. Didn’t it say that she trusted H*ram?
From like the journals and stuff I think it was implied that Hiram GREW to become paranoid and wack ass. hirams paranoia and distaste for jess etc develops later on. theres that note from him complaining about emily
maybe it was just trust out of habit. if he's worked with euhorn before, jess knows him, or thinks she does. if she'd known him for a long time, and if his paranoia developped only later on, I could see how that'd work. He might have been around even before his appointment? As advisor or something. the bastard was the only one who seemed reasonably competent and a little less corrupt. Dude successfully usurped power for 6 months, that takes some skill. If it weren't for the plague getting out of hand he might even have kept it.
or she didn’t really had a choice in it? alternatively jess' hand might've been forced to appoint him, ie her council was like girl appoint him. bc yes she CAN ignore them, but also she shouldn't
he was a knowledgeable person and jess was possbly enocurgaged 2 appoint him, like shes empress but theres parliament and stuff. Over timex the gap between them widened
It's not too much of a stretch to think that back then Hiram looked like an acceptable choice. Competent enough, not too corrupt yet, sure he's slimy as hell but what else would you expect from a Spymaster? Like Jess probs just thot that sneaky Spymasters are Like That™️ but like no Hiram is just Like That
Yeah especially since from the little we know of the previous Spymaster, he was. Definitely not a good guy either. I'm not sure if he was enough of a dick to beat up and kick a child out for essentially no reason, or if Euhorn asked him to find an excuse to get Delilah out of the way - since she's his illegitimate child and older than Jess. But regardless, there were plenty of less cruel ways to do it
