AU based on this prompt
The god is the Outsider, the prophet is Jess, their spouse is Corvo, the team of assassins are Daud and the Whalers
The role of prophet with an organized team of assassin fits Jess better but Corvo has better chemistry with the Outsider so… Corvo is the one to initially catch the Outsider's attention. Jess goes hey that gives me an idea and becomes a "prophet". The Outsider finds the whole thing hilarious
They're not Empress and Protector in this AU they're just normal people (initially). They're this couple living with their daughter when Corvo starts dreaming of the Outsider. Daud is their next door neighbor/friend who lives here with his 65 adopted kids. They're pretty sure he's a mob boss but they don't ask.
Corvo tells Jess of his dreams, Jess goes "hey you know what would be fun", they get Daud and the Whalers in the whole plan and then it works perfectly well and goes wildly out of hand
and next thing they know Jess is a prophet. They start as a "fuck you" to the Abbey because the Abbey sucks. But then they get an actual following
They start off as a fuck you to the abbey, yell a scandalous prediction in the middle of an Overseer's speech. Like "Brother Chris goes to the Golden Cat every Saturday and asks for the leather special, and IN THREE DAYS your sins will be exposed". And three days later the local newspaper gets a full file of compromizing pictures.
So the Abbey goes "bitch you just set it up" so Jess does more... cryptic predictions. Things that you can't set up (unless you happen to have a team of assassins and saboteurs on hand, but this is just a woman out of nowhere so of course she doesn't have that, right????)
on the one hand it's a GIGANTIC SCAM and they go to extreme lengths to maintain the facade, but on the other hand if they reveal it now their life is finished, also Emily will be caught in the crossfire, and also they're effectively reducing the Abbey's influence and mitigating the religious monopoly so it's ???????????????????
They do their best not to be exploitative, they don't ask for money, whatever donation they still get they redirect towards charities, but on the other hand Jess is known for accurately predicting the future so they get request about important events, so they have to pick sides sometimes, but not always the same side because it's suspicious... Regardless how well-intentioned they try to be it's way too much power to hold.
They mitigate it best they can by trying to stay out of major events, pretending Jess can't pick what she predicts. Alternatively, they set up several predictions where it looks like something will happen, but Daud&co execute it in such a way that the prediction is technically true but not in the way anyone interpreted it. So they learn not to put too much trust in the prophecies. Because even if they always come to pass it may not be how you expected it
when the thing starts getting out of hand she goes to Jess like "Sis what the FUCK is happening" and Jess half breaks down and says that they didn't mean to go this far, and Delilah decides to support her because fuck the Abbey. The witches fill in when the Whalers aren't suited for a mission for whatever reason. Also somtimes they pool resources and knowledge for particularly complex jobs
Daud and Delilah's attitude here is like "fuck the Abbey all my homies hate the Abbey", and they're supportive friends/sister to Jess, and they're not the most morally stable people around, so yeah they're all in
Emily knows it's all full of shit, she was there at the beginning when it was supposed to be just a joke. As for her opinion it'd depend on how old she is? Depends on how long they keep the lie running. But they keep it up for years at least and eventually she starts disapproving
When the lie gets too much to maintain they set up an escape, either fake Jess's death, or make up a cataclysmic excuse to justify their express need to retire in an isolated village in Serkonos or something.
they decide to cut the bullshit and fake Jess's death and retire when the whole thing starts to sour their relationship with Emily. Emily has grown up, starts to see that all of this is not right, they don't mean harm but the methods are yikes. And she starts openly disapproving, speaks up against her parents, so Jess and Corvo decide to call off everything. They were starting to think of retiring anyway, Daud has a plan in stock just for that occasion, and they refuse to keep going if it drives them more apart from Emily.
