Pirate captain Daud would've been press ganged into working on a ship as a lad (british navy was Bad At Treating Everyone) - maybe merchant navy. then managed to escape (like canon) and get involved with pirates and work his way up to become a feared captain. initially, his intentions would have been more honest e.g. rebelling against the british empire, who took him away from his mother blah blah blah angst but as time past and he grew more sour and what not he became more brutal towards non naval vessels such as merchant, passenger ships.

his ship would be notorious for their at sea tactics and manoeuvring, they became so infamous that most surrender at sight of the ship (again, common for a lot of pirates but more so for Daud and the crew). Daud is an excellent tactician and strategist who can easily out manoeuvre any vessel and manipulate the situ to his favour. He knows those waters like the back of his hand and regularly uses hard-to-see reefs and shallows to trap other ships

Daud raiding a ship and finding all the younger people that also didn’t want to be there and taking them under his wing. most of his crew joined from raided ships (again, common for pirates) but with Dauds reputation preceding him, many young, disillusioned, alone and lost sailors wish for a raid by the whalers, in the hope they can join Dauds crew

Daud and the whalers have a secret based on an island,, it's incredibly difficult to get a ship into due to the bathymetry
