Description:

corvo gets a dog. emily wants a dog. Daud already has dogs. everyone has dogs.

General:

After the plague Dunwall gives all rats a bad name but some citizens keep them as pets because hounds are relatively hard to get considering the Abby has them almost exclusively. So it’s not uncommon to see a rat being a part of small families with no backyards. Considering how building in dunwall look mainly like appartments and richer end homes are all one floor. So hounds are out of the option for most of dunwall’s population ((also Thorpe might be stealing all the good ones for himself)) rats are the more sustainable option for families with children wanting the responsibility of a pet but lacking the funds and the room for other things.

Fish are another topic. Many a day you’d see a family at the river with a net, either for dinner or to start a new pet adventure. Most tanks are rather crude and small for the fish pertaining to dunwall but if a family can snag a smaller fish then they can at least have a small amount of time with a pet before it becomes dinner. Since fish are considered more food then friend most fish are kept to be fattened up in case money for dinner isn’t available/or unsafe to buy.

Bloodflies are for more exotic pet lovers. They do not handle transport from Karnaca to Dunwall due to the change of climate (I’m imagining Dunwall has a cooler climate then Karnaca’s more tropical one) but if they do survive the journey they are placed in small tanks. Often a symbol of status among households due to the expenses taken to deliver them. Although many an academic has sought out live bloodfly samples from a household. Many resorting to a large sum or stealing.

Corvo (& the witches):

Corvo has a dog. corvo and one big dog chilling on the couch on a hot karnaca summer day. a v small dog he carries around all day in a backpack. The big dog caries babie dog in a dog pack. If corvo had a dog he would name it Dog send tweet

Can we make it cannon that after the events of dh1 Corvo owns white rats? thinking of the bone charm that white rats don’t attack cause rats be low key cute and where like, his only trustworthy companions (besides Samuel of course) cause the rats haven’t done shit except survive.

corvo in dh2 getting driven out of dunwall and the main thing on his mind is "OH FUCK WHO'S GONNA FEED MY RATS WHILE I'M GONE". the witches break into corvo's room and just find like 20 rats. They all have knitted sweaters. the witches taking care of them,,,

their undead wolfhounds accidentally ate a couple and they made graves for them. the undead dogs are so cute high key. I would get one. just carry them around in your backpack and set them on the ground whenever you see a dog park

The rats have their names on a chalkboard w a brief description of what they look like and their personality. Corvo can distinguish them immediately but it’s for the maids. Each rat enjoys different things so they need to know which one wants what. They’re as spoiled as Emily and I bet there’s like 1 named Jessamine and it’s the most pampered rat in existence.

The rats all get tiny cushions to sleep on that have their names on as well but most of them end up in a cuddle pile. Jessamine the rat has the biggest cushion and isn’t actually fully white. She’s got little brown splotches so she’s very easy to spot. Every week there’s rat bath day where they get washed and smell nice. Emily did (and still does) hang out with them when her duties become a bit too much for them to handle. They live in the Kaldwin vault but they do get taken out periodically to live in the bedroom.

he plays with the dog by the shore and throws a stick out into the water and they play fetch. WAHT IF HE GETS ATTICUS AFTER THE RAT PLAGUE AND THE SURVIVING NOT-LOYALIST GANG COME VISIT HIM AT THE PUB AND THE DOG REALLY LIKES ALL OF THEM

A year or so after dh1 Atticus has a litter of the scraggliest cutest mutt puppies (with another dog or maybe Atticus is a girl, either way), and Emily adopts one and it lives at the tower with them. Lol it’s funnier if sam thinks atticus is a boy and then they have a litter & he’s like. Aight. Not a boy

wHAT if Atticus’ previous owner died of the plague and sam finds them as a stray and takes them in

Emily:

Emily trying to pet every overseer hound she sees as a kid, which results in corvo running after her bc those dogs are kinda aggressive

what if emily had a pet cat between dh1-dh2. in my head the cat WAS a kitchen cat meant to catch rats but it's fat and lazy and barely caught them. (also i mean who needs a rat catcher cat when you have the royal protector)

it gets upgraded to Royal Cat™️ (which emily insists IS a position) when Emily is like "cat!!" and the staff are like "fuckin here you go your majesty have the cat" and it's the most spoiled cat to ever exist probably. it's the one thing that isn't emily that is allowed to sit on the imperial throne

either the cat dies before dh2 or just mad chills in the tower until emily comes back. or takes down delilah itself, who knows, cats can do a lot

Hypatia & Vasco:

hypatia finding an injured little bird and helping it, treats it like she would any other patient, except this patient is tiny and baby, probably bonked into the window and broke its wing or got attacked by one of the lab dogs or some shite idk

Vasco (if this is pre-fuckery idk man) would be SO excited bc he loves animals. Hypatia coming back from outside with the tiny birb and Vasco immediately lights up

Hc vasco had a wolfhound as a child. He was thinking about getting another one later in life but soon found himself too busy with his work. He was also extremely saddened to hear that a wolfhound was mauled

He always had a thought in the back of his mind of raising pets with Dr. Hypatia. But that was before, you know

Could Hypatia's bird be trained to fetch small items for her? Because that mental image honestly just seems adorable. The birdie makes an absolute mess out her supplies sometimes,,

I mostly see it as Just Some Random Wild Bird so there probably isn’t much training or anything going on though

let’s say this is set when everything is fine and the bird eventually leaves to live a happy life Also before things go to shit and it does not get eaten :) Hypatia can rehabilitate the bird, have a friend for a while, and release them to live a happy life while everything is still good

maybe I’ll go with the “it got got by one of the test hounds” origin yeah,, accidentally got inside and the dogs were like :pogchamp: and a nearby staff member noticed it with something in its mouth. perhaps said staff member is vasco. local man tries to wrestle bird from person-sized dog’s mouth while trying to avoid hurting either of them. practice for later encounters with his boss

he walks into her office with it cradled in his hands like “uh,” the bird’s pretty roughed up and shaky from the encounter, one of its wings got broken by the hound’s bite and it’s bleeding in a few places but it looks like it’ll live. and hey, it’s a slow day, it’ll be a bit until they have to see the next patient, might as well help this little bird. and then they do :)

they clean up its wounds and do a bit of suturing on the deeper ones, then (after a bit of a debate on what would even work to help a bird’s broken bone) wrap up the injured wing and hope for the best because they’re doctors for humans and the academy doesn’t teach people much about care for random birds. and it probably does end up being the right call and the bone mends

hypatia isn’t really sure what to do next but she gets a box and lines it with a blanket and plops the bird in there and hopes that’s a step in the right direction. two medical experts staring at a fuckn bird like “years at the academy never prepared me for such a situation”

she offers it a shallow dish of water and that’s where they pause again— what,, what does it even eat,,,, Insert bird feeding deliberation here

i feel like they’d know the basics about animal care, or maybe vasco has an interest in fauna and took a bunch of classes but still pursued medicine because of financial worries. they know basics but not necessarily stuff for this specific scenario yknow. most of they stuff they know would be like. dogs and cats,

hypatia who spent the better part of her life in studying pathology, not knowing how to approach the injured bird. they’re just 8| 8| “what do we do doctor” “don’t look at me”

she has vasco go raid the kitchen (by “raid” I mean “he walks in and asks politely”) for things that are theoretically appealing to birds and they just. keep offering it things until it eats something. stuff that people know birds generally eat. seeds etc all that. hypatia rooting around in the dirt looking for worms... “why do they have birdseed in the kitchens at addermire” mind your own business. bird eats, mission success, Vibing time

If the bird is released once healed, do they come back to visit Hypatia and/or Vasco from time to time? Or maybe the bird sets up somewhere in the roof(?) of Addermire and doesn't really have to come back to visit, they're just kinda there? And occasionally if Hypatia or Vasco is out there, they'll be surprised by the bird just suddenly landing on their shoulder/head

It hangs around even as things go south at the place (not like it knows or cares about the humans’ affairs), vasco gets some comfort from its presence but hopes that it doesn’t seek hypatia out at the wrong time

I doubt alex would go out of her way to get some random bird’s ass ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ She would if she knew it meant a lot to hypatia and vasco. FUCK THEM BIRDS 2. ITS COME FULL CIRCLE
