a smaller au where mindy, after trying to figure out how to imbue magic in herself using tattoos and sorta passively studying the old witch hand paolo has for years, sees the protaganists mark. and just. becomes obsessive because what the fuck did this person figure it out. she needs to know. she tries to study the protaganist. study the mark itself, their abilities, their whole hand. she forgets her duties and just sinks deep into her research.

here Daud's mother is still alive and lives in Batista. She's famous for scaring Howlers away every time they try to racketeer her even though she's like 80 and mostly blind. Mindy tries once every couple month to get info from this woman who is apparently a witch???? but she chases her off with a broom every time yelling IT'S JUST HERBS AND DEADLY POISON YOU NOSY FUCKER

And at some point her son who's been gone for decades come back and it's the talk of the neighborhood and some howlers try to rough him up a bit. If you can't get to the mother, try the son, right? And they come back with several broken limbs and having pissed their pants and crying about witchcraft and Mindy is O_o. Cue several months of Mindy trying to follow Daud (with no idea who he is) and get info from him but the old fucker is impossible to tail.

And then of course the DH2 protag arrives in Batista and Mindy is like ALRIGHT THIS TIME I'M NOT LETTING THAT ONE GO

Also Mindy lets slip at some point "that heretic mark is interesting, can I study it? There's another one in town with something similar but I can't get a hold of him :(" and the protag goes just o_O.
