Description:
Emily still draws.
It’s her way to cope with all the past traumas from her childhood, she never stopped drawing. With her empress duties, it’s more difficult for her to squeeze in time to draw as freely as she’d like to; so her nights spent sneaking out into the hazy Dunwall night across rooftops is her dedicated time to draw.
Emily likes to use charcoal and sanguine - something about the feel and texture she thoroughly enjoys about it, and being able to smudge and meld her art freely with her fingers is her favourite. It’s therapeutic.
Emily’s art has evolved and she has a knack and talent for it, though in contrast to her childhood where she had all her art on display; she’s very reserved and private about her art keeping it to herself. Corvo has an inkling that she still draws but he doesn’t pry, if she wants to confide in him she will they’re dealing with the past traumas in their own small ways.
Emily enjoys drawing landscapes more than anything, on her nights out on the rooftops she likes to draw the clock tower, as well as the distant rocky formations surrounding Rudshore central. When she’s feeling more daring she sets shop at the beach and sketches the ocean, she often thinks of her mother when she’s drawing the ocean. Sometimes when the pain doesn’t hurt so much she likes to sketch the gazebo, though often times she ends up scribbling or tearing the page out on frustration and grief (she always keeps the sketches though in the bottom draw of her office).
Emily carries around in her breast pocket a small worn journal, it’s frayed at the edges and full with added pages shoved in the back. She uses her old childhood headband to tie closed the journal and keep everything safe together. She usually shoves all her charcoal and sanguine in the journal as well. She likes it all in one place.
During the coup, she draws a lot more erratically in her room or on the deck of the Dreadful Wale. On the first night her drawings are frantic renders of Corvo in stone, Alexi lifeless and Delilah. She’s restless and the sight of Delilah makes her rip the pages out and shred them. Emily takes to drawing the endless expanse of the ocean, sometimes after being marked, she draws the ageless boy with the void black eyes that used to haunt her in her childhood dreams. Secretly, Emily tries sketching Meagan every chance she gets - she finds Meagan to be an interesting subject with the air of mystery and caution she holds. She thinks she’s sneaky, but Meagan knows but chooses to act like she doesn’t.
After being on the Dreadful Wale for a comfortable few days she calms down but still draws more, anxiety gnawing at the back of her mind. She likes to draw while holding the heart close to her chest, the subtle beat and soft echo of a familiar voice giving her anchorage at her worst times. She never draws the heart though. She can’t.
When they’re a few days away from Karnaca, Emily plucks up the courage to investigate Anton’s room. She couldn’t bring herself to do it till then. When she sees all of Anton’s art supplies she tries to “stealthily” swipe some to her room to experiment more. Of course Meagan notices, but she doesn’t say anything she just shakes her head with a sad smile. Emily experiments with some of Anton’s paints, she immediately grows frustrated and throws in the towel. It’s beyond her how Anton has the patience to paint, she much prefers the rush of sketching quickly and messily with charcoal and sanguine.
Once she ends up on the docks of Karnaca, she’s overwhelmed. It’s humid, the air breeze hot and wafting foreign smells. The atmosphere is different to Dunwall and she has trouble getting her bearings sorted out. She ends up setting camp in an abandoned apartment overlooking the ocean to give her some time to function properly, doing some loose sketches in her small journal. Once she’s calmed down she continues onwards, she knows that she shouldn’t dawdle. But it’s hard.
Emily is immediately drawn to Mindy Blanchard, she sees her from the window of the shop keepers house in the small courtyard. Emily decides to do some quick sketches of her, a few minutes of sketching won’t hurt? Mindy notices her immediately and calls her down, Emily feeling bashful and embarrassed for being caught out. She finds Mindy to be interesting, and strange but she grows fond of her immediately.
When Emily arrives at Addemire, it takes all her willpower not to stop and draw every five minutes - she’s on a mission, she needs to find Alexandria Hypatia, she can’t waste her time drawing as much as she’d love too.
(She ends up sketching quickly a few areas, she can’t help it).
When she finds Vasco and is soon confronted by Grim Alex she can’t help but find Hypatia’s gruesome form to be morbidly fascinating. She’s itching to draw her and the foreboding corridors that encase her, despite knowing she /needs/ to make the elixir formulae. (She ends up sitting high up in the ceiling rafters sketching Alex, tempted with risking getting closer to her but deciding against it. She ends up having to make a quick escape when Alex spots her and tries to attack her).
For the next few days her sketchbook is riddled with wild eyes, and serum injectors.
