what if thorpe was gradually getting more and more disgruntled over the 6 months ebtween jessamines murder and corvo's escape,, one day he catches wind of the loyallist conspiracy - maybe a friend of a friend of a friend - and thorpe, doubting corvos guilt, wants to help out in anyway, another small fry helping to change the wider world
id also say that several other prison guards have similar vibes towards like the regent as thorpe, but thorpe was the only one brave enough to put his life on the line to free corvo. I think a lot about that, when you overhear some of the guards talking, one talks with spite about Thorpe but at the same time raising yout voice against the Lord Regent is pretty much a straight way to the prison, should you do anything, you are betraying him. This is why what Thorpe did goes beyond jist needing money. it's Coldrige. People don't just break out if there. You need a ton of faith in something to risk that, or you have to have less than 2 braincells. He is an officer, knew what he was doing. u cant break out of coldridge without HELP - corvo wouldnt have escaped if THORPE didnt do that (absolute king), so thorpe knew exactly what the consequences would be, and he still did it
oo ok but thorpe seeing corvo back as the royal protector and it's very hard for him to put the image of the shivering, bleeding wreck in coldridge with the straight-backed, well dressed man by the young empress' side
thorpe languishing in his prison cell after being caught, probably being tortured for more info on who else helped,,, thorpe WAITING, HOPINg that the loyallists would send help for him too, but whether they cared or if the heightened security aat coldridge was too much, thorpe didnt know. He couldn't help hoping, that's human nature, even though logically he knew it made no sense to risk anything for him, it was a rollercoaster between utter mental fatigue and small blinks of stupid hope
he took the job for the monye, to care for his family and to make sure they got elixir rations too
thorpe got caught because another guard snitched on him, saw thorpe meeting w martin in a dark alley, more than once..
its also. so bad of the loyallists 2 just leave him, but at the same time, what else could they have done?? i wonder if martin pushed to try free thorpe (hell he was the mastermind behind the oroginal plot right) - but havelock/pendlebitch vetoed it cos it was too risky, and when he looked into it the increase in security,,, "Thanks for risking everything abd breaking him out, have a nice execution." hc that martin feels awful about thorpe being scheduled for execution
I think the thing is they didn't even think about trying to do anything? I don't feel like they did, because Thorpe didn't natter beyond slipping the key, and the Loyalists aren't charity. yeah defo, the loyallists r hard as bitches who have one goal, and we see that the expendables are well expendable - but also, they never planned to kill wallace/lydi/callista IF U SUCK - so idk maybe they didnt start out so callous?? or so outwardly callous
I feel like especially Havelock would be like, not WISHING harm to Thorpe but Thorpe is collateral damage. It's not worth risking anything, and Thorpe knew the risk. Thorpe is also a loose end - when the Loyalists poison Corvo they pretend that he was the Empress's killer and plan to use that to present themselves as the hero who caught him. But Thorpe knows that the Loyalists were the ones to free him.
after dh1, corvo sees that thorpe gets the proper recognition for his work + compensation for his jail time/near execution. i wonder how often corvo thought of thorpe in the months leading up to emilys return to the throne??
man what if Thorpe knows Sam. Sam just knows everyone bc he's Sam. He's offered Thorpe a ride once (and it would be totally inconspicuous if Sam hadn't called "Corvo? Is that you?" before Thorpe came out of the shadows. Which neither of them are going to talk about. Ever) on account of him reminding Sam of a friend
Sam was so ready for corvo it was a weird awkward silence then they nodded at each other in a silent agreement not to tell anyone
Geoff def knows Thorpe slipped them the key, and he knows that Thorpe didn't just do it so he can feed all the runaway hounds. He tries as best he can to keep Thorpe from being executed, but it isn't enough--and him arguing has put a target on his own back (the whores dying is just an excuse; Campbell is really just there to shut him up about the escape). Geoff is also the reason Thorpe is immediately reinstated and promoted when Emily is back on the throne
Also I love how Thorpe being reinstated post-DH1 implies that someone (probably Geoff) is gonna ask "So how did you escape your execution?" and poor Thorpe will have to answer that is was the fucking Knife of Dunwall who saved his ass.
does he know it was daud "aw just some weird parkouring overseer, really weird man".
"uhhhhhh" (was that Daud? isn't Daud just a bogeyman? and he was in Overseer's clothes?? but he teleported??!?!?) "no sir i guess the executioner is just a poor shot. ran out of bullets before one could hit me, you know how it goes."
so like. thorpe just thinking this really weird overseer who didnt give a FUCK resscued him. thorpe initially belieiving it to be martin and that they came back for him, until daud speaks and thorpe realises that no, real life isnt like that. honeslty though, thorpe NOT seeing any magic from daud, and just thinking that theres still some good out there, and being hopeful again. like thorpe at this point has spent weeks-months in jail and he HAS lost hope, but takes comfort in the fact that hopefully his sacrifice will lead to a better dunwall away from this tyranny. and then. he is rescued, by some parkouring overseer. and he can finally smile and go back 2 this family
Thorpe doesn't think "teleporting Overseer that parkour and also carried an unconscious woman out with one arm" is going to fly it with Geoff. Unbeknownst to him, Geoff has seen Things™️
headcanon that before he gave corvo the key, thorpe got his family OUT of dunwall and to safety just in case. Even if they are still in danger of having properties and shit taken away, at least it's a delay because the regent has more pressing matters to pay attention to than some family of a guard who's getting executed anyway, it's just a paper sitting on his desk for now
does thorpe get a medal along w the hounds pits survivors gang. "I survived the loyalists". thorpe being all nervous about being there bc he barely did anything right?? all he did was give corvo the key, he did nothing else.. and corvo is just like. dude. DUDE! without you, i never would have escaped and none of this *gestures at like the fancy room w food and people smiling and no plague* none of this wouldve happened :)
