The 1987 varsity football qualified for the class 4A playoffs. (No team picture available.)

Overall Record 6-4

Conference Record 5-0

Although they lost in the first round of the playoffs to Herscher, the varsity football team had a great year. They won the NEC in part because of their tough defense. In their first game, Coal City only had 1 yard of total offense in the game. The MVPs were Todd Reische and Brian Edge. Nick Offerman won Sportsmanship. Mike Earing was Best Offensive Lineman, and Best Offensive Back was Bill DeKlerk.
