My painting of a tin can was my response to a unit where we studied still life or ‘nature morte’. The subject matter is a simple aluminium can, with the lid still attached, an object that would normally be discarded rather than the subject of a painting. I positioned the can on the diagonal to create a more dynamic composition. The work was completed using oil paint on board as part of our studies into painting techniques. The shadow box frame adds to the presentation of the subject as an object of beauty and importance.
