My work explores the style of cubism and is influenced by the work of Pablo Picasso. It represents the 2D transformation of an image into a 3D solid form, using terracotta clay. My focus was on exploring multiple viewpoints and expressions that were inspired by people; these expressions were exaggerated to better convey emotions to viewers. I particularly like the way the viewer can interpret his or her own understanding of the characters emotions. I exaggerated the facial features and emphasised the sharpness of the lines, in particular the nose and I elongated the eye shape. The process began with two small slabs of solid terracotta clay that was then manipulated and sculpted. I used sculpting tools to create a relief sculpture of positive and negative space, creating an illusion of depth which led to the emergence of three faces that shared different facial features such as an eye, nose and eyebrow. I particularly like the duality of the artwork, which can transform into two separate pieces. I wanted them to be connected but be able to disconnect as well, the separation shows the division and conflict between the faces or the conflict oneself often has with themselves. The translucent, white and clear, smooth glaze contrasts against the red ochre features and rough textured areas, resembling circus characters.
