Taking inspiration from Jeffery Smart, who had a great vision using colour, I wanted to explore colour and incorporate pattern in my work. I was inspired to use pattern after seeing the work of MC Escher.

My triptych frames move from warm to cool colours and inside the frames implant complementary colour, like Smarts work. For my final frame, I wanted it to have an emphasis point and so I tried to have my own take on Francoise Nielly’s work by using a palette knife to apply the paint to the female face. During the process it messed up and, in an effort to start over, I tried to scrape the paint off. However, this bought an unexpected effect that I decided to keep and a technique I would implement in the starting half frame. The colour all works well as yellow is repeated in every frame and the same length of tape also repeats itself lots.

I was also exploring the question of graffiti, is it vandalism or art? These images are supposed to be artwork on top of roller doors.
