The aim of my work was to explore a part of my identity that often remains uncertain and unclear through the use of contrast and symbolism. The title of my work references a work by aboriginal artist Gordon Bennett, But I always wanted to be one of the good guys, in which he interrogates his dual cultural identities. In my own work the separation of images communicates the individuality of both my Chinese heritage and Australia’s social climate and the different ways these two cultures have created my personality and characteristics. I used watercolour in both flat and realistic ways to create a greater sense of contrast.
