St Patrick lit the pascal fire from the crest of the Hill of Slane in direct defiance of the pagan kings of Ireland who had ordered that no beacon fires be lit. This act was a public display that Christianity had arrived and was in Ireland to stay. The ruins of an abbey built there subsequently are still evident today.
