Luscious Grapevine

Luscious Grapevine

Year 6

Holy Eucharist Primary School, St Albans South

This screen was done for a theme on ‘Communion’ for the open Art room, easy to be seen by the school community. We decided to make a 3D display that would stand out. The medium we chose was Textiles, making use of textured wool and learning different techniques such as knotting to create clusters of grapes, simple crochet knitting, some pompoms and finger knitting. We represented healthy growing grapes in red, lilac, magenta and multicoloured balls of wool. A lot of the work was done during our spare art time and during lunch breaks. We enjoyed doing the finger knitting as it was fun how we could use our fingers to knit and make the vine grow longer. We didn’t want to stop because it seemed so easy to knit. It was very satisfying attaching clusters of wool grapes to the intertwined vine, climbing on a wooden trellis, bought at Bunnings. We feel the colourful grapevine looks good against the wooden trellis as both wool and the wood have their own textures. This project also makes people stand and think about the importance of grapes making the best of wines. Our various types of imagined grapes are just as luscious, a feast for the eyes, with their capacity to produce juice and wine.
