Canvas of a Melancholic Muse

Canvas of a Melancholic Muse

Generally, my intention with this artwork was to explore the portrayal of femininity in art throughout different time periods, and how this has evolved with differing cultural contexts. In this work, the female subject matter sits idly with a melancholic, wistful look on her face. In capturing this, I have attempted to recreate the ‘regal’ aspect of traditional art, where the subject matter simply served as an artistic muse and is presented with a dainty, striking appearance.

It invokes a meditative, somewhat dreamy mood, with its vibrant colours and portrayal of the subject matter as somewhat of a ‘holy’ being. Through the use of the traditional media of oil on canvas, I attempted to emanate a very traditional, historical aesthetic, with realistic and soft textures created through intense blending and no abstract elements that relate to more contemporary styles.
