The Echidna

The Echidna

Claire, Year 2

St John Vianney's School, Mulgrave

In term three my class had spent some time mixing colours and experimenting with painting our new colours on large sheets of colours. I needed to make new colours by mixing two or more primary colours. Soon after we learnt about the Victorian artist Pete Cromer. Having watched and looked at how Pete made pictures by layering coloured paper as collage art we then started thinking about how we could use our colour mixing experiments to make our own collage work.

I really liked a few of my colour mixing paintings and used the colours from these to help me decide on an Australian animal to try to create using collage. I picked the echidna because I think they are a very interesting Australian animal that you won’t find anywhere else just like the colours that I mixed up myself. It took a long time to cut out all the spikes for the echidna’s back. There are so many. I nearly gave up but I’m really happy that I kept going. I was happy with the shape that I put his body in. He looks like he is ready to roll up.
