Poppies

Poppies

Olivia, Year 6

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary School, Sunbury

Hello my name is Olivia and this is my description of the poppy artwork I've done earlier in the year. So basically my teacher Liza Rosati asked our class to do some poppy artwork. She put some on display for us to get inspiration for our artwork and I chose a particular image to base my art piece on but I ended up adding my own detail and technique to it.

I started off with the stems of the poppies with a base green colour and eventually added highlights to it. I always focus on light and shade as that is what my other art teacher has taught me as I go to a private art classes. Chalk pastel is one of my favourite art mediums so it was easier for me to do the piece. So then after doing the stem I started off with the poppies. I started with (same thing) a basic red and added my shades of darker reds to it and my shades of grey. Then I added the highlights to make it stand out. A highlight against a dark really gives you an impression on the piece. When using the black it can sometimes look plain so if you pay attention to the art piece you can see I added blue to break up the black and pink on the outline of the red to add highlights. I think the artwork ended up turning out good for the colours as the red goes well with the green because green is a complementary colour to red.

I enjoyed doing this art piece because poppies as everyone knows represents those fallen soldiers from wars and I love how that flower represents that.

Thank you for accepting my art piece.
