Thalassophobia

Emmanuel, Year 12

Mazenod College, Mulgrave

My theme this year is phobias. Fear is a part of our lives. Our survival instincts act as a catalyst for fear. Without fear we are adventurers without caution, minds without curiosity. However, fear is also subject to irrationality and lengths of extremity, and these cases are known as phobias. In this work, using greylead and aquarelle pencils I am portraying an embodiment of the 'Fear of Oceans'. Ideas such as the Bermuda Triangle, with boats falling into a deep abyss, are part of the symbolism contained in my drawing.
