External funding is handled by the student, with the support of the Mike Petryk School of Dentistry research project coordinator.
The research project coordinator will provide support for faculty members applying for external grants.
Prospective students should apply for external funding as soon as they have made their decision to pursue graduate studies.
Current students and faculty members can apply for external funding at any time depending on the deadline of the grant of interest.

Find out what the funding agency cares about and who they help (their mission).
Clearly explain how your work will help them reach their goals.

Read the eligibility rules very carefully.

If you're confused about any rule, ask them immediately!
Keep your project plan realistic.
Don't promise too much. Show that your team can actually do the work.
Make sure your project steps and expected results are easy to achieve and prove.
Be perfect with your money plan (budget).
Make a detailed list of every cost.
Prove why you need the money by providing the required evidence.
Check their guide to see how they define different costs (e.g., does "supplies" include travel?).
Know all the dates and deadlines.
Pay close attention to the project timeline.
Understand when you have to show them results (deliverables).
Find out if you have to apply again every year for more money.
Write for a busy person.
Be very clear and use simple language.
Reviewers are often short on time and might not be experts in your field—avoid technical jargon.
Ask friends or co-workers to read it over.
Have people you trust read your whole application before you send it.
