Simulation Lab
The doors to the simulation lab are on constant lock. You will be required to scan your ONEcard to gain entry.
If your card does not work, please let one of the staff members know and they can look into it for you.
If you have any concerns or witness any damage, please report it immediately to the simulation lab coordinator at simlab@ualberta.ca or 780.492.1349.
After-hours practice time is available to currently enrolled dentistry and dental hygiene students. The times follow the ECHA building hours.
The lab may be booked for events, classes, repairs or maintenance, and may not be available. There is a schedule posted on the entrance door for daily activity. This is a shared space with nutrition.
NOTE: After-hours practice is considered a privilege and can be withdrawn if abuses are discovered.
Simulation Lab Code of Conduct
Student code of conduct provided in the Clinic Manual
Professional conduct is expected at all times. The simulation lab is where you learn and practice the skills you will use in our patient care clinics.
The goal of learning in the simulation lab before entering patient care clinics as an operator is to learn each skill exactly as you will perform it during patient care. This includes wearing the clinical attire & PPE that you will be required to wear in clinical areas. The clinical attire and personal protective equipment required at all times for all instructors, support staff and students when in the simulation lab are:
Scrubs
Closed-toe and closed-heel shoes
Safety glasses
Mask (required when simulating patient care or is required by instrument, equipment or material MIFU's and/or MSDS)
Examination gloves
Head cover (recommended)
Gown (when working with amalgam)
Headphones, of any kind, are not allowed during lab simulation sessions. For your safety and the safety of those around you, being able to hear small fluctuations in the sound of the equipment while in use and being able to hear and respond to your instructor and colleagues around you is crucial when practicing dental skills in the simulation lab.
Playing music over the simulation system requires the approval of the course coordinator. The choice of music must be broadly acceptable to the class. Regardless of their approval the volume must be at a level you would have if you were treating a patient, that is, background music.
Using the video system for playing videos, sports events, etc. is not acceptable. The simulation lab is a professional environment meant for maximum learning with minimal distractions.
Students are not allowed to operate any of the AV systems within the simulation lab. Only the course coordinator or the simulation lab support personnel are allowed to operate the AV system.
Head covers are strongly recommended when in the simulation lab. If you choose not to wear a head cover, hair must be well-controlled and tied back to prevent it from falling forward toward your face and the simulator.
Respectful interaction with all support staff is a professional conduct requirement. Failure to treat support staff appropriately will result in a professionalism failure for the session. Repeated instances will be escalated to the course director.
Students are not allowed to bring food or drinks into the simulation lab.
All backpacks must be left against the wall and not adjacent to a working station.
Instructors are expected to dress in scrubs. Professional conduct must be modelled at all times. Jeans and T-shirts are not acceptable.
No unauthorized individuals are allowed into the lab.
Simulation lab lockers are for storing equipment and project materials.
Each person is responsible for cleaning up their work area. DO NOT leave until your area is clean and ready for the next class.
All equipment MUST be turned off after use or at the end of your lab.
Students are responsible for ensuring their simulator is clean and stored appropriately after use.
Any equipment issues/maintenance concerns should be brought to the staff's attention immediately.
When working in the front lab and back workroom, all PPE regulations must be adhered to.
