Day of Dentistry

March 7, 2024  |  DentraNet

The School of Dentistry hosts a day dedicated to vendors and companies to come in and provide the students with the most up-to-date information on their services, products, technology and advancements in all aspects of dentistry and dental hygiene. This day is called, ‘Day of Dentistry’ and it will be held on Friday, April 5, 2024, at the Lister Centre on the University of Alberta campus.

Day of Dentistry provides students with the unique opportunity to connect with vendors and companies who they will be working with in the future as they enter practice or post-grad careers. This day gives students the chance to expand their knowledge of what it takes to build and maintain successful careers. While educational programs and academics give them the tools to be good clinicians, connecting with vendors gives them the tools necessary to become sufficiently well-rounded oral healthcare professionals.

Additional Activities on the Day of Dentistry include:

RESEARCH POSTER PRESENTATIONS – GLACIER ROOM (11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.)

The School's Student Research Group is hosting a dynamic poster session that will highlight the outstanding research projects of students participating in the undergraduate research initiative program. All graduate and undergraduate students with a passion for research are welcome to present their work in this engaging event.

The poster session serves as a unique platform for students to showcase their dedicated efforts and share their knowledge with the wider community. After the poster session, an evaluation will take place, and the most outstanding posters will be carefully selected and announced for their exceptional quality and contribution to the field of dental research.

Come check out the posters and learn what the students are doing related to research!

PHOTOVOICE PRESENTATIONS – ALBERTA ROOM (11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.)

They say pictures are worth a thousand words. The concept of using pictures to tell a story has spanned much of human history. A photograph can serve as an entry point into a story. It can deepen one’s understanding of the story. It can move you in ways unexpected and stimulate a visceral reaction. It can also propose a different lens to look at a situation.

Photovoice was initially designed as a qualitative research method that engaged people living in the community to capture their lived realities. The photographs can act as tools to foster critical discussions poignant to the community to create a platform for advocacy and change. In dental hygiene, the photovoice method was adapted for student reflection.

We invite you to the Alberta Room where the presentations will be available for all to view and ask students questions and learn!

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT SESSION – EVERGREEN ROOM (2:00– 3:00 p.m.)

Brad Ambury from CTL will discuss generative AI, investigating the potentials, uses, and implications of AI apps and tools for teaching, learning, and assessment (design). He will share with attendees hands-on experiences with AI tools, address the impacts of generative AI technologies like ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Copilot, and Google’s Gemini Advance, and suggest effective teaching strategies for possible opportunities for AI-tool integration.

Brad will also provide an overview of CTL’s AI-related resources, focusing on the importance of instructor-student dialogues when establishing guiding principles and transparent expectations for AI-use or non-use in courses and classrooms. The goal is to enhance AI literacy in order to inform pedagogical decision-making.

FACULTY CALIBRATION SESSION - EVERGREEN ROOM (3:00- 4:30 p.m.)

This session will bring all the disciplines and programs together to go through processes and protocols that are relevant to how we deliver clinical education and patient care.
