About Dr. Kent H. Gibb
Dr. Kent H. Gibb graduated from the faculty of dentistry at the University of Alberta in 1969. He has had a long and varied history as an instructor.
Two years later he was invited to join the sessional teaching staff to teach dental anatomy, occlusion and second-year and third-year fixed prosthodontics. In 1975, he took on the additional role of course director of second-year fixed prosthodontics. In 1980, more responsibility and teaching demands were added as the role of course director of dental anatomy and occlusion was included in his teaching portfolio. In the dental hygiene program, Dr. Gibb taught both dental anatomy and dental materials for many years.
His familiarity with computers was put to good use when he created, in collaboration with Joan Conklin, a cutting-edge computer-aided instructional set of 13 lessons for first-year dentistry and dental hygiene students. These lessons were used for many years and replaced the need for many lectures in dental anatomy and presented the material more interestingly and interactively for students.
The school's efforts to assist the community through 'open wide' clinics were spearheaded and led by Dr. Gibb for many years and the picture of him running through the halls in his open wide t-shirt on those busy clinic days is one remembered fondly by many who volunteered.
Dr. Gibb especially enjoyed teaching in both the lab and the clinic, and spent many hours on the clinic floor, demonstrating, teaching and counselling with senior dental students. This activity was his greatest love of all of his experiences in the dental profession. In the clinic, he was able to see the culmination of his foundational teaching in previous years come together in the comprehensive practice of dentistry in the hands of budding clinicians. He also was a significant mentor to many students, taking great interest in their personal development from their very first days in dentistry to their graduation as professionals, ready to tackle the challenges of dental practice.
He retired from teaching at the end of 2005 due to ill health.
His infectious laugh and ever-smiling face brightened the hallways of the dentistry/pharmacy building and his saxophone performances at many faculty events will be remembered by many. Over the years, he has been recognized, most often in very personal ways, by the many students that he taught as a significant influence in their education. He has been known for his enthusiasm for teaching, his love and passion for dentistry and his care and concern for students and patients alike.
The Gibb Teaching Awards, created as the highest teaching awards bestowed by the school, recognize the significant contributions made by Dr. Kent H. Gibb to the school and the profession as a whole.
