Shine Dentistry

Shine Dentistry is a student-run clinic that runs a free emergency dental clinic on Saturdays in the Boyle Street neighbourhood.

This work is made possible by the dedication of our students from all years and preceptor volunteers, the generosity of our sponsorship partners, and the vital support of key organizations. Partners include The Metis Nation of Alberta, Boyle McCauley Health Centre Dental Clinic and Alberta Health Services.

Community impact

Oral health care services have been provided by University of Alberta students through the Student Health Initiative for the Needs of Edmonton (SHINE) program since 1993 when the Boyle McCauley Health Centre Dental Clinic (BMHC) dental clinic was first established. Located in the Metis Capital Housing Corporation Renaissance Tower, the clinic provides easy access to free oral health care for vulnerable populations who often goes without adequate care. This clinic enables better oral health for underserved populations but it will also help provide preventative care. The clinic provides dental extractions*, fillings, root canals*, cleanings, and pediatric exams*, with some cases needing referral to University of Alberta for affordable treatment may be necessary.

Student impact

Students get experience running a clinic from various aspects, and there is a student committee of 12 that organize the administration, communications, logistics and fundraising.
