John was recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation as a Commended Student having placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2023 competition when taking the PSAT/NMSQT. Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success. He represents a valuable national resource; recognizing his accomplishments, as well as the key role AHS plays in his academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation.

HOMECOMING ~ ALUMNI HALL OF FAME
The Alpena Wildcat Hall of Fame Committee convened on Tuesday, August 2nd to review applications for the Wildcat Hall of Fame. The committee unanimously approved two outstanding candidates for induction this Fall. The ceremony will take place as part of the Homecoming festivities on September 30th, 2022. The two new members are Steven Bye Class of 1968 and Michael Mahaz Class of 1994. Steven Bye has led a distinguished career earning numerous honors and accolades as an outstanding educator, coach, artist, and published author. His artwork has sold internationally and been featured in newspapers and magazines. He recently exhibited his work at the Besser Museum. Michael Mahaz has earned the distinction as an international business leader for Jabil Inc. He serves as their Vice President of Medical Devices and Consumer Health. Michael travels across the globe to lead a division that generates 1.2Billion in annual revenue for Jabil Inc. He is also very active with numerous charities in the Tampa area. They will join a group of distinguished Alpena High School graduates on the Wildcat Wall of Fame in the main office lobby at AHS. Nominees should exemplify the pride and spirit of Alpena High School. They must have distinguished themselves in their career, their community and society as a whole and must be out of high school at least 10 years. Nominations are taken annually until April 15th. Homecoming Week begins!
Updates on Spirit Jug: we will announce winners at assembly
Hall decorating begins with Mr. Bourdage at 2:45pm in the Large Commons and ends promptly at 5pm.
Pizza and pop will be provided.
Your parade floats and hallway clean-up will carry over to Winterfest points
As long as you’re spirited and represent your class, you’ve got nothing to worry about with your parade floats
Parade starts at 4:30, so be ready to go by then!
Tickets will be sold in C132 during all three lunches for $10 dollars; Dance is 8:30 - 11:30pm
Must get guest forms signed by both schools’ principals by this Thursday
Students failing 3 or more classes cannot attend the dance
Sign up in the main office for the assembly games to help win some points for your class
AAACU is also running an event next week to win spirit points, stop in to answer a financial trivia question and you’ll get a point towards the jug. Every point matters!
Powderpuff game is Monday at 7pm at Park Family Field at Wildcat Stadium, fill the stands and cheer on our Wildcats!

EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO PARTICIPATE ~ A MESSAGE FROM OUR SUPERINTENDENT
This week is We are Wildcats Week across the district. Students, staff, families and the community are invited to participate. Anyone that would like to show their Wildcat Spirit at their home or business, can pick up a We are Wildcats yard sign at any APS school, APS Central Office on Gordon Rd. or the Alpena Chamber of Commerce starting on Monday 9/26. They are available for $5 each.
There are events at each school to celebrate throughout the week but all schools will have Green and White Day on Friday September 30th for Homecoming.
The Homecoming Parade starts at 4:45 at Ella White Elementary and runs to Alpena High School. There will be a tailgating event sponsored by Northland Area Federal Credit Union starting at 5 P.M outside the Park Family Field at Wildcat Stadium The Wildcat Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony begins at 6:15 P.M. and The Homecoming Football game starts at 7 P.M.

MHSAA Scholar Athlete Award application is now open.
Deadline for application is December 2, 2022 at 4:00pm

After all applications are submitted a group of coaches, teachers and advisors from APS will choose the application to send forward. Alpena which is a class A school can submit 6 boys and 6 girls for this award.
TO START AN APPLICATION:

College Month is here!
Seniors and parents take note of all the events happening in October for College Month!
* On college visits encourage students to stop in and talk with reps and ask questions. They will be set up in Media Center .
*Encourage all seniors to apply to at least 2 colleges as I have a raffle for an Amazon gift card. Entry sheets are in senior lounge
*Take note on the free applications for colleges during October. Some have codes and deadlines. Best time to apply is NOW!

SCHOOL PICTURES ~ LAKESHORE PHOTOGRAPHY

FYI - Parents who did not have either an email or cell number listed when their student was photographed will not be receiving the electronic proof. You will soon receive a HARD COPY proof (we will distribute) that will have all the ordering information you need. Lakeshore Photography reported that their lab is working like Santa's elves in the workshop in an effort to get the printed proofs to us as quickly as possible.
The photographer - Lakeshore Photography will be sending hard copies of all students' proofs. Once we have received them, we will distribute them to students. The proof will have all the ordering information your family needs to view and order your picture.

YEARBOOK STAFF TAKING HOMECOMING PICTURES:
Please look out for our AHS Yearbook Staff during the week of Homecoming. They will have BRIGHT NEON GREEN badges and will be taking pictures at Kickoff, the Assembly, The Parade, The Dance, and Spirit Week. They will be out during Advisory and 5th Hour during lunches, but also may stop and ask to take your picture during the day.
OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
