COUNSELING CORNER: Did you know that you can talk to your family doctor about your child's emotional well-being. Sometimes, parents do not know where to turn when their child is showing signs of depression. The family doctor might be a good place to start. Talk to your child about making an appointment and maybe consider letting them talk to their doctor in private.
Are you taking any online classes for next year? You need to meet with your counselor to select your classes and fill out the paperwork prior to May 12.
Have you met with your counselor to select you semester 1 Dual Enrollment classes for next year....... classes are filling up, don't delay!

Counseling Corner: Did you know that May is Mental Health Awareness Month? Recently, AHS Student Ellisyn Olson decided to do some research about mental health issues for high school students. Here is what Ellisyn learned: Many AHS students recognize the importance of actively working on their mental health in order to foster a state of well-being and balance. One student metioned the importance of being creative through projects such as crafts. Another student mentioned how exercise increases her sense of stability and relieves stress by increasing endorphin levels in the brain. Research shows that music can help regulate stress and calm the mind and spirit. Furthermore, an involvement with music can promote emotional intelligence. Other ideas to boost mental health wellness include: "staring at the ceiling while listening to music", having a music & housekeeping cleaning marathon (your parents would love this!), journaling, meditating, getting off of social media, seeking assistance through a professional or just through your personal support system. What are you doing this month to recognize Mental Health Awareness and to promote a sense of well-being for yourself and for your friends and family?

Career Corner
On Wednesday, April 26, in partnership with Alpena Community College, Alpena High School Career & Technical Education (CTE) hosted their first Annual CTE National Signing Day. CTE National Signing Day was created by NC3 (National Coalition of Certification Centers) and began at Washburn University Institute of Technology in 2014. AHS CTE is an educational partner of NC3 through the Precision Measurement Certification. Since 2014 there have been hundreds of letters of intent signed by students all across the nation. The intention of National Signing Day is to show the value of students that are entering a technical field and to emphasize the importance of their career choice. Technical education will prepare them for a strong career to build families, sustain communities, and grow a highly skilled workforce.
12 senior students participated on Wednesday as they signed their letters of intent to further their education in a Tech field at ACC in the Fall of 2023. Each of these students are currently enrolled in at least 1 of 11 CTE programs offered at AHS and they all have chosen to continue within their program field at the collegiate level. We commend these students for taking an important first step on their path to a rewarding future in a high demand field.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Resources
We care about the health of our youth in Alpena and the surrounding counties – and access to medical insurance is part of that! All Alpena High Health Center services are available to patients regardless of insurance coverage or ability to pay; however, we want to ensure students can access medical care elsewhere if needed!
We are here to help you and your family get medical insurance. We have trained staff to assist you in completing the MI Bridges application. This application allows you to apply for multiple resources, including food, medical, childcare, utility, and cash assistance at the same time. If you have internet access, you can apply online here or call our office for assistance completing this application.
Please donate bottles to our bins in the cafeteria all next week.
Please consider bringing your collected bottles and cans from home to the yearbook staff in the AHS PARKING LOT on Saturday, May 6th
If you need to make other arrangements or have questions please contact the yearbook staff:

OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
PEER MEDIATION
AHS now has trained student peer mediators to help solve conflicts between students! If you are in conflict with another student, please see me in Room E110 or you can e-mail me at robargeb@alpenaschools.com Remember, peer mediators are trained not to take sides or place blame on anyone.
