EMPOWERING 21ST CENTURY GRADUATES
Congratulations on your selection... Colt Walter
Collaborative: Team Player- Willing to fulfill a variety of roles in group settings; Communicator- Able to effectively share, receive and interpret information; Flexible- Willing to adjust, adapt and compromise to address varying circumstances.
AHS Custodian, Mrs. Hanna was delivering packages and had a handful. Colt saw her at the stairs with multiple boxes and immediately jumped in and asked if any went upstairs, he grabbed them and delivered them to the teacher. He could have easily walked by and done his own thing, but he proved the Wildcat way is the culture that we are building by jumping in to help. Colt is new to the district from out of state and we are glad to have him as Wildcat.
Congratulations On Your Selection

Parents this is a great time to review your student's classes and see if they are needing any help in all areas. AHS teachers staff this program and they are ready and willing to help all students. As you review grades in week 3, remember that it is early in the semester to be behind with failing grades. It is a great opportunity to seek help before falling behind, getting frustrated, etc.
You may also reach out to your student's counselor for clarification.
Call or email your student's teacher directly and ask for focus areas to target on in tutoring. The teacher may reach out and offer suggestions to the teacher.
AHS staff is always willing to help and want to partner with families and communication is a must both ways. We are excited for a great 2023-2024 school year.

On September 17, we honor the anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution by delegates at the Constitutional Convention. This is a national day of observation of the birth of our government. In Social Studies classes you will reflect upon our nation’s rich history & development as a constitutional democracy. The Constitution is the greatest governing document & at some 7,000 words, it is one of the shortest governing documents in the world. The Constitution has guided our history by providing the American people with what they can reasonably expect from their government and by outlining the rights by which all Americans live in this great nation.
Safety/Security Reminders
Together we can do our best to ensure that our students and fellow staff members are safe and secure when they are in our schools.
Alpena Public Schools holds the safety of our students and staff as our highest priority. From the passage of the Safe, Warm, Dry Bond to additional investments in school safety, APS is continuously improving our ability to provide a safe and welcoming environment at each of our buildings.
APS has been working closely with law enforcement, first responders, emergency management personnel, and school safety experts, as well as utilizing feedback from our staff and community, to develop our safety and security protocols.
Here is a list of some reminders:
Doors
All exterior doors will be locked and closed at all times.
All doors used for entry and exit will be monitored by a staff member.
Exterior doors may never be propped open.
Students and staff may not open an exterior door to let anyone into the building.
Classroom doors will be locked at all times.
Classroom doors, when locked, may be open to the hallway.
The district will provide a mechanism to allow the door to be locked, yet not latch if in the closed position.
All glass in and around classroom doors must be covered so the interior of classrooms is not visible from hallways.
Entering a Building
All visitors and students entering a building during the school day must do so only at designated secure entries.
Badges and Guest Passes
All APS staff must wear identification badges while at work. Badges must be prominently displayed (not hidden by clothing).
All visitors must have a guest pass on while in an APS school building.
Please report any adult that does not have a badge or pass visible to the building administration.
You can expect regular communication throughout the year updating you on our efforts to continuously improve the safety and security of our buildings.
At AHS this week, we had two safety drills ~ Tornado and Fire Drills. Please talk over the importance of practicing these drills in the even that we have a real one. The classes were outstanding and did well. We have a few more to do and after the initial drills, they are not announced. Today's fire drill was 2.5 minutes after we discussed the instructions~ record setting to be honest!

OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
PEER MEDIATION
AHS now has trained student peer mediators to help solve conflicts between students! If you are in conflict with another student, please see me in Room E110 or you can e-mail me at robargeb@alpenaschools.com Remember, peer mediators are trained not to take sides or place blame on anyone.
