Counseling Corner:  Xello is a program we utilize to help students with their journey toward a career and  their plus 1 in education.  There is lots and lots of information available in the Xello program to help with many different decisions a teenager faces as they move toward adulthood.  Students can log into their account anytime, from any computer to research or add information.  Parents, you can log in to see what your student has entered.  This can be an awesome tool to increase communication and assist with decisions.

In recognition of May being Mental Health Awareness Month, Alpena Public Schools (APS)  is pleased to announce an evening focused on mental health is being held on Tuesday, May 16th. It will begin with an informative community panel discussion that will take place at 5:30 P.M. in the Alpena High School (AHS) Auditorium.

It will be immediately followed by a live presentation from a local nonprofit, The Sunset Project, founded by APS Grads Nick Poli, Kevin O'Brien, and Gavin MacDonald, called "Ending the Silence (ETS)" at 7 P.M. In Partnership with NAMI Grand Traverse, The Sunset Project will implement ETS, The National Alliance on Mental Illness' evidence-based, nationally recognized program in health classes at AHS this spring. The presentation will be similar to what students will experience in the classroom.

The entire event will be live streamed and recorded on the APS YouTube channel @AlpenaPublicSchoolsMichigan (Please note the previously announced zoom option for “Ending the Silence” will be replaced by a live stream of the entire event.)

APS is proud to partner with many local agencies including Alcona Health Center, Catholic Human Services, MyMichigan Health, Northeast Michigan Community Mental Health Authority, Thunder Bay Community Health Services, AMA-ESD, Partners in Prevention, District Health Department #4, The Sunset Project and The Community Foundation of Northeast Michigan to shed light on the topic of mental health and make our community aware of all available local resources.

This event is free and will include informational booths from many of our partners in the lobby outside the AHS Auditorium. A panel discussion will include representatives from the school district and our community partners. If time permits, general questions may be asked of the panel members.

HOW TO REPORT THREATS/CONCERNS

OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
