EMPOWERING 21ST CENTURY GRADUATES
Congratulations on your selection Mrs. Johnson
Collaborative: Team Player- Willing to fulfill a variety of roles in group settings; Communicator- Able to effectively share, receive and interpret information; Flexible- Willing to adjust, adapt and compromise to address varying circumstances.
Mrs. Johnson is the Restorative Center office assistant. She has been a tremendous help with the implementation of our cell phone procedure. She contacts parents to keep them informed, as well as greets kids before and after school who are on a cell phone plan. She is also one of the first faces students see when entering the Restorative Center. She finds out what support they need and gets them in contact with the right person. Thank you Mrs. Johnson for setting our students up for success!
Congratulations to you all on your selections ~ you make us all so proud and thankful for what you all do to make AHS the BEST.

Testing Corner
NMSQT results are now available online for students who took the test this fall. Students can access their scores online through their College Board account. Visit College Board today to access your scores.
All teachers will give a comprehensive exam/evaluation at the end of each semester covering the curricular content of each course they teach.
Exams/evaluations will be given on the designated exam dates.
It is understood that other end-of-course tasks may need to be completed during this time period in addition to the exam/evaluation (i.e. collecting books, locks and other school-issued supplies).
Final exam/evaluation time is not to be used for non-instructional activities.
The weight of the exam/evaluation grade must be included in each teacher’s syllabus/SBS. The exam grade will be specifically indicated on student report cards.
Parents ~ it is a good time to review ParentVue and communicate with teachers with questions or concerns. We appreciate parent communication and encourage it.
Counselor Corner:
Counselor Robyn Miller will be hosting an Informational Parent/Student Forum regarding NCAA at 6:30pm at AHS. If you are interested in playing college level sports, you will want to attend to learn more.
Fact of the week: Did you know that Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of seasonal depression that occurs mostly in fall and winter? It is thought to be caused by shorter days, less sunlight, fewer outdoor activities, and increased isolation. Make sure you are getting some sunshine, even when it's cold! Spend time with people who have a positive effect on you.

Are you a student athlete? Are you planning / hoping to compete at the college level? If you answered yes to either of these questions, you and your parent/guardian should attend the Parent Information Forum on Thursday, December 7th at 6:30 P.M. in Alpena High School Wildcat Den (Formerly known as the Media Center.) AHS Counselor Robyn Miller will be hosting the meeting regarding NCAA Eligibility Center registration. She will explain the process, eligibility requirements and answer your questions. NCAA registration is required for a student to participate in a Division 1 or 2 sport at the collegiate level. This is an informational meeting not a meeting to assist with the registration itself. This event is open to all area schools.
For more information please contact Alpena High School Counselor Robyn Miller at (989) 358-5217 or millerr@alpenaschools.com

AHS Emergency Drills ~ All classes had conversations focusing on what to do in the event of a school lockdown. While we can practice, if an actual event were to occur, we must rely on in the moment, critical thinking skills. The more conversations we have, the more prepared we can be. Please continue this discussion at home addressing potential actions your student could take, with the hope that these plans will never need to be utilized. Our upcoming drills will occur during passing time and during lunch hours.

Parking Lot/Driving Safety
As you drive to school in the winter months, please be mindful of the parking lot and being slippery. It will be slippery for sure ~ so give yourself plenty of room to stop.
Parents, this is a great opportunity to take time and talk about winter driving and making good choices as we all relearn our winter driving habits.
Mr. Irwin and Schultz will have the cones out when students arrive at 5:30am marking each row, and I advise that you start parking at the cones and move to the left in the rows ensuring that they stay straight and there is plenty of room for everyone.
~ Seniors with your parking spot, hopefully you are able to do your best to locate your spot with it being snow covered; do your best and find a landmark as you park this winter.
Be safe and be smart! Please be cautious as the first snow is always a learning event. The same goes for when you are leaving at the end the day ~ give yourself plenty of room to stop.

OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
PEER MEDIATION
AHS now has trained student peer mediators to help solve conflicts between students! If you are in conflict with another student, please see me in Room E110 or you can e-mail me at robargeb@alpenaschools.com Remember, peer mediators are trained not to take sides or place blame on anyone.
