EMPOWERING 21ST CENTURY GRADUATES
Congratulations on your selection...
Owen Mendel
Contributor: Citizenship- Recognize the importance of their role in our connected world; Involvement- Willing to actively engage to make a positive difference; Community Oriented- Able to balance self-interest with the needs of society.
Owen saw a need in the Senior Lounge with the student ping pong table and went above and beyond to locate a new one and get it to the school. I have to say we tried before Christmas and were not successful. I put the responsibility to get it done with him, and he did just that. Good work Owen, as the Senior Lounge is a good space for a good group of students. The senior class of 2023 Rocks!
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR SELECTIONS
Make sure to follow your SEMESTER 2 SCHEDULE on Synergy.
If you have an open hour, report to the Counseling Center that hour.
If you have an error in the schedule, report to the Counseling Center that hour.
All other schedule changes, students must use the Class Change Form located on the AHS Web Page under the Counseling Corner. Remember, staff has repeatedly announced schedule help for weeks, allowing all students ample opportunity to address concerns.
Course change requests will not be accepted after this Wednesday (1/25)
Counselor Corner: Are you unhappy with your first semester grades? Remember, second semester is a fresh start and a clean slate! You can always do better this semester by planning ahead for success! Do not wait until you fall behind to seek help. Make a plan to stay after school with your teacher, or plan to attend tutoring on Monday or Thursday after school in the Media Center. Also, don't fall behind in your assignments and make sure you regularly turn in your work. Staying caught up is easier than getting caught up!
After School Tutoring Temporarily Paused
We are taking a short break from after school tutoring. Tutoring will resume January 30. This will be staffed by AHS teachers and assistance can be provided in any subject. Tutoring sessions will be held in the Wildcat Den (formally known as the media center) 2:45 to 3:45pm every Monday and Wednesday when students have a full day. Specific information for each week will be posted in student announcements. Students do not need to sign up in advance and students are responsible for their own transportation. Please contact Mr. Pattison @ (pattisonj@alpenaschools.com) if you have any questions.
WELCOME
Thank you for helping when we needed you! Shannon Vivero assisted us this semester by agreeing to Long Term Substitute in late August with our Spanish position. She only had a few days to prep and worked the semester to make the Spanish experience a good one for our AHS Spanish I & II students. I thank the Instructional Coaches and the Foreign Language teachers for assisting Shannon along with way. She was a quick learner and was not afraid to ask for assistance. Thank you Shannon for answering the call to help us this semester!
As we are sad to see Shannon leave, she understood that the position was posted, and we had a wonderful candidate interview and accept the position. You may have seen her in the building observing today and working with the staff. Kady Gehrke joins the AHS Staff as a Long Term Substitute after graduating last year from Michigan Technological University with a Communication, Culture, and Media major with a minor in International Spanish and French. She is excited to dive in and work to give our Spanish students a great learning experience. Have a great day on Monday as you meet your students and get them ready for the world of Spanish.
Winterfest is quickly approaching! If you want to bring a guest that is not an AHS student, you must pick up a guest pass in the main office or in the Restorative Center (E103). They must get a signature from the principals of both schools and submit it to the office by the Thursday before the dance. This is the only way to bring a guest, so do not wait on getting the paperwork!
Speak to Mr. Thatcher in Leadership for more information.
Would you like a certain song to be played at the dance? Now’s your chance! Fill out suggestions in this Google form or drop off suggestions in the Song Request bin at lunch to have your songs possibly added to the playlist! There are no song requests during the dance, so get your ideas in early! Speak to Mr. Thatcher or any Leadership student for more information.
Spirit Week is almost upon us! Have a great idea for a spirit day? Submit your ideas in the bins in either the Main Office or the Large Commons, and you may have your suggestion used this Winterfest! We will accept suggestions until January 27th.
Speak to Mr. Thatcher or any Leadership student for more information.

Students ~ Please help our Custodians after school hours
If you are staying for athletics, club activity, or help in a class, you must be in a supervised area and not moving throughout the building. It is the expectation that students exit the building after school by 3pm and under adult supervision.
If you are awaiting a ride after 3pm, you need to be in the back foyer or the lunch tables near the student entrance facing the Front Oval.
If you are in an unauthorized area, the custodians will be asking for your student information.

OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
PEER MEDIATION
AHS now has trained student peer mediators to help solve conflicts between students! If you are in conflict with another student, please see me in Room E110 or you can e-mail me at robargeb@alpenaschools.com Remember, peer mediators are trained not to take sides or place blame on anyone.
