EMPOWERING 21ST CENTURY GRADUATES
Congratulations Olivia Burdinie and Aliccia Carroll on your selection...
Confident: Self Aware- Able to identify their own strengths and weaknesses; Growth Mindset- Embrace their ability to grow through dedication and hard work; Grit- Willing to expend sustained effort to complete a task with excellence.
Aliccia and Olivia worked on an PBL project for World Perspectives outlining the need for a Student Council at AHS. They came in and presented their project to me in early June and were very convincing and supplied great data. As a new principal, I had hoped to do this but just did not find the opportunity in my first year. We all walked away with a drive to see this be a reality. Again, the year started and Student Council fell on the back burner, and they again met and shared their desire to see a plan implemented by second semester. We accomplished their goal in having our first Student Council meeting on January 5, 2023!
Stay tuned as the students that are leading this project up are ready to start making a positive impact at AHS.
Congratulations Student
and
Staff of the Week
After School Tutoring!
We are continuing to offer tutoring assistance after school for all AHS students! This will be staffed by AHS teachers and assistance can be provided in any subject. Tutoring sessions will be held in the Large Commons (Media Center is under construction) from 2:45 to 3:45pm every Monday and Wednesday that students have a full-day. Specific information for each week will be posted in student announcements. Students do not need to sign up in advance and students are responsible for their own transportation. Please contact Mr. Pattison @ (pattisonj@alpenaschools.com) if you have any questions.
Happy New Year and congratulations on your Dual Enrollment opportunity! I want to clarify the role of a Dual Enrolled student, especially with the one week overlap of Semester 1 ending on January 20th and the start date at ACC on Monday the 16th.
You have to remember that you are an AHS student first and foremost and communication is vital with both your AHS teacher(s) and ACC instructor(s) about your status. Unless you communicate with them DIRECTLY, neither will necessarily know that you are a Dual Enrolled student.
If there is an overlap in classes, you need to send an email including all parties involved explaining your dilemma with conflict in being in two places at the same time.
The next communication should be a telephone call, google meet or in-person meeting with each teacher/instructor to make a plan that works. Your AHS teacher will do everything in his/her power to work with you to assist. You may need to miss one of them and need to have a plan to ensure that the right choices are made. If the AHS teacher is mandating that you be in the class on a specific day, email your ACC instructor explaining and seeing what you can do to make a plan.
Do not assume that either party knows that you are Dual Enrolled. The person cannot read your mind nor will the teacher even potentially think about it. Remember, he/she is starting a new semester as well and has a ton going on in his/her world. Explicit communication is vital!

Any questions, please contact Coach Eric Mackenzie.
Winterfest is quickly approaching! If you want to bring a guest that is not an AHS student, you must pick up a guest pass in the main office or in the Restorative Center (E103). They must get a signature from the principals of both schools and submit it to the office by the Thursday before the dance. This is the only way to bring a guest, so do not wait on getting the paperwork!
Speak to Mr. Thatcher in Leadership for more information.
Would you like a certain song to be played at the dance? Now’s your chance! Fill out suggestions in this Google form or drop off suggestions in the Song Request bin at lunch to have your songs possibly added to the playlist! There are no song requests during the dance, so get your ideas in early! Speak to Mr. Thatcher or any Leadership student for more information.
Spirit Week is almost upon us! Have a great idea for a spirit day? Submit your ideas in the bins in either the Main Office or the Large Commons, and you may have your suggestion used this Winterfest! We will accept suggestions until January 27th.
Speak to Mr. Thatcher or any Leadership student for more information.

To utilize the health center the consent form must be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to the clinic. Students do not need to be established patients of Alcona Health Center to utilize the Alpena High Health Center. If any students would like to establish care with our provider, we are happy to help schedule that too!
Communication with parents and guardians is key to ensure we can provide the best care for our student patients. Please feel free to contact our staff listed with any questions or to schedule an appointment!

Students ~ Please help our Custodians after school hours
If you are staying for athletics, club activity, or help in a class, you must be in a supervised area and not moving throughout the building. It is the expectation that students exit the building after school by 3pm and under adult supervision.
If you are awaiting a ride after 3pm, you need to be in the back foyer or the lunch tables near the student entrance facing the Front Oval.
If you are in an unauthorized area, the custodians will be asking for your student information.

OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
PEER MEDIATION
AHS now has trained student peer mediators to help solve conflicts between students! If you are in conflict with another student, please see me in Room E110 or you can e-mail me at robargeb@alpenaschools.com Remember, peer mediators are trained not to take sides or place blame on anyone.
