Counselor Corner: Sexual Assault Awareness Month continues....
There are so many ways a person can be involved in Sexual Assault, either as a victim or as a perpetrator. You do not want to be involved on either side of the issue. Sometimes people do not realize what is happening at the moment it is happening, pause and think for a moment. Sometimes a person is feeling "pressured" into doing something related to sex or intimacy.. do not give in to the pressure.
A person may ask you for "spicy," Nude" or "sexy" photos.... DO NOT EVER send photos you do not want the world to see of you. These photos very often do not stay private! Just don't send them!!
If someone threatens to hurt you or hurt their self if you do not comply with their wishes or if you break up with them.... it is not a good relationship. It is their problem that they need help with. Do not give in to that kind of control.
If someone confides in you that they have been assaulted, you should advise them to tell an adult. Be supportive! Believe them! Validate their feelings! And get them some help.
Do not falsely accuse someone of assaulting you. It can wreck a person's life. It is not a joking matter.
We all need to protect ourselves from being assaulted. Regardless of age, gender, race, religion or any other variable. It can happen to anyone!
We also need to protect ourselves from getting in a situation where we can be falsely accused.
Avoid victim shaming! What a person is wearing doesn't matter. What a person has had to drink doesn't matter. (In fact, it is illegal to have sexual contact with a person who has had a mind-altering substance.) Where a person agrees to meet you doesn't matter. The position you are in doesn't matter. A victim is a victim if that person did not clearly say yes.
If you or a friend has been a victim of Sexual Assault, please talk to an adult about it. The counseling staff is here to support you!
Attention Seniors! Don't forget to turn in a copy of your Scholarship Award letters to Mrs. Vought in E House Counseling. You can also scan and email them to her at voughtl@alpenaschools.com. We won't know about your scholarship unless you tell us, and we would like to recognize you at our Virtual Senior Awards Night on May 19!

CTE Highlight
On Thursday, April 28, 2022, Michigan’s Career & Technical Education (CTE) students will be at the State Capitol showcasing their programs. These CTE programs are real examples of what is taking place in high schools and technology centers throughout Michigan. This Showcase provides legislators and the public an opportunity to see first-hand how Career & Technical Education is meeting Michigan’s new higher expectations for students and preparing Michigan’s workforce.
15 CTE programs representing programs around Michigan will be on site to tell of skills and certifications earned in their classes. Alpena Public Schools will showcase the Business Management and Digital Media program with CTE teacher Amanda Pilarski and students Aiden Cardwell, Lanie Morgan, Abigail Rabbideau and Colt Gray. Also accompanying the students is CTE Director, Joyce McCoy, Superintendent, David Rabbideau and Communications Director, Lee Fitzpatrick. APS CTE programs have received strong legislative support in recent years allowing refreshing and updating of their 11 CTE programs.
Career & Technical Education provides the pipeline for a skilled workforce and focuses on technical skills, as well as integrated core subjects such as math and science. Career & Technical Education students in a program may earn industry certificates, college credits, or advanced placement when enrolling in postsecondary education. Over 125,000 students a year participate in CTE programs and follow-up surveys indicate that 95% of the CTE students are enrolled in college, working or serving in the military within a year of graduation. Programs work with local business advisory committees to ensure students keep up with industry practices and standards.
Career & Technical Education is learning that works for Michigan!

Mini Commons
Due to the necessary remodeling in the Media Center/AAACU Student Union for the fall of 2022-2023, it is necessary to move texts and materials, so Mrs. Samp is needing to close the Mini Commons through the remainder of the school year to accommodate her materials. I ask for your grace in this endeavor as it is vital to bettering AHS for all students-- stay tuned as we launch the project. It is an exciting endeavor partnering with AAACU.
After School Tutoring!
We are continuing to offer tutoring assistance after school for all AHS students! This will be staffed by AHS teachers and assistance can be provided in any subject. Tutoring sessions will be held in the Media Center from 2:45 to 3:45pm every Monday and Thursday that students have a full-day. Specific information for each week will be posted in student announcements. Students do not need to sign up in advance and students are responsible for their own transportation. Please contact Mr. Pattison @ (pattisonj@alpenaschools.com) if you have any questions.
