EMPOWERING 21ST CENTURY GRADUATES
Congratulations on your Selection Jillian
Contributor: Jillian dug deep using her citizenship and strength to reach out in the social media world and speak out positively about AHS in a time when it was needed last week. It is easy to criticize and find fault in things, but Jillian chose the positive road! She stated that AHS is a good place to be and that many students find it to be a place that they can excel and want to be present daily. She takes pride in being a Wildcat and treasures her school as a place where everyone can thrive and learn. Congrats to Jillian as our 1st selection and start of the Wildcat Way!
Congratulations to Thomas Sheridan on being selected as a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist or 2021-2022! He is one of 16,000 students chosen across the nation and he represents AHS in that honorable selection. We all wish him success as he competes. He is truly an ambassador for Alpena High School.

As you can see, this is a very important visit, so please beat the rush and set an appointment today to visit with your counselor about options and resources to plan for your future!
From Lisa Siegert, School Success
Alpena High School is committed to making sure our students are 21st Century learners. Part of that process means that we teach the required classes to help you graduate and move on to future careers. The other part of becoming a 21st Century learner means that we teach professional skills such as writing an email, interviewing for a job, preparing a resume and dressing for success. Dressing for success means that you dress appropriately for each social setting. For instance, you wouldn’t wear a ball gown to a soccer game or Speedos to church. Both of those examples would raise some eyebrows or may get you kicked out. The workforce also has its own set of rules for dressing appropriately. Since school is where you learn the skills to be a productive member of the workforce, our goal is to help you learn acceptable clothing choices while you still maintain your own unique individuality. When getting dressed for school, please look in the mirror and ask yourself, “Could my teacher wear this to school?” If the answer is “Yes”, then you’re good to go. If your answer is, “My teacher would be fired for wearing this” then please make another choice.
Dress codes exist in every environment. Be aware of your social setting and dress for success!!

Media Center News
From Mrs. Samp-- Media Specialist/Chromebook Tech
Mrs. Samp is beginning to prep for getting the Media Center up and running as she nears the completion for the Chromebook roll out. I will keep you posted as to the use of the Media Center.
What to do if you have a broken Chromebook:
Take the Chromebook and cord to Mrs. Samp along with $30.00 for insurance.
The insurance must be paid in order to take the loaner Chromebook home with you.
Upon the insurance payment the broken Chromebook will be sent in for repairs.
Also the home of the AAACU Wildcat Branch
As you know, the Wildcat Branch is in the Media Center and open for business during all the lunches.
KAPUT ~ Kids And Parents United Together
It is TIME! Let's make this the best year ever for our students.
Parents: KAPUT is a long standing tradition of giving back to help make AHS a place where students want to come. I have two senior parents that are willing to lead the group and put together great events for our students. We need to have the underclassmen parents join in on the planning so as to help carry on the tradition. We we will hold an organizational meeting on Tuesday, September 28th, @ 6:00 pm in room D211.
If you are are interested in volunteering, but are unable to make the meeting, you can email haugerudb@alpenaschools.com to be added the list. Please include your name, phone number and the name of your student.
Flag Reverence Q & A and Discussion
In recognition of Constitution Day/Week and an effort to help in better understanding the American Flag, there will be a meeting for interested students in D-211 on Thursday, September 23rd with an Iraqi Veteran and AHS staff well versed in flag etiquette. We are looking forward to a great Q & A with interested students and open dialogue setting. I have held meetings in the gym this past Monday, and students are interested in learning more and sharing thoughts and ideas. I encourage students to attend and look forward to a great first meeting.
Wildcat Way Suggestion Box
I have placed the Wildcat podium box on the table in the foyer and welcome student to use if for student suggestions and input. You are welcomed to put your name, phone number, and email so you can be contacted if necessary. I hope to use this in helping to build the culture at AHS and get student input. I would also like to have two students join our AHS Climate Team which meets each month working to make AHS a great place for all. If you are interested, you may put your name in the Wildcat Way Suggestion Box or email me directly.
Tardy and Personal Responsibility
As we enter the 3rd week of school, it is time to make sure that you are getting to your classes on a timely basis each hour. Teachers will be assigning lunch detentions for those who are tardy to class. Lunch detention is held in room D-102. If assigned a lunch detention, students should get their lunch, head to the room and begin working on homework. Again, AHS staff is pushing the Wildcat Way in giving students personal responsibility by respecting their teachers to be on time for class each hour. Personal responsibility also includes attending your assigned lunch detention without a reminder.
No cellphone use of any type (this includes ear buds)
If you need to reschedule, it is your responsibility to contact Dean Florip to change dates prior to the assigned detention. Missing a lunch detention will lead to an after school detention.
Very Important and Urgent
Parents, please read this article and talk to your students. AHS has already witnessed this widespread in both boy's and girl's bathrooms. With the help of students, we have been able to apprehend and discipline some; however, it is a very time consuming and foolish way to waste principals, deans, custodian, maintenance, and security time. It is destructive and has no place at any school. As I shared in the inaugural Wildcat Way, we must applaud the 90% that are recognized for the good that they do at Alpena High School. You can also find information from Grand Blanc Schools on this topic who are also criminally charging any event/person(s) linked to the TikTok craze. I do not want to see this happen to anyone at AHS, but Administration will follow through and charge at this point forward.
Closed Campus and Overflow Parking Lot is Closed
The AHS Campus is closed for all students except those enrolled in Dual Enrollment and Early College. You may be asked to stop and share your schedule as you go to the parking lot in the upcoming weeks. Students who have online classes and are leaving for the day may be asked as well. Please be kind and do so when asked. We are only attempting to ensure student safety and campus security. The parking lot is off limits during the school day unless escorted out by a principal, security, or Officer David.
The overflow parking lot is closed and there are plenty of open parking spots on the main lot, please use those at this time. The gate to Bagley Street will be locked as well. The buses have had difficulty with the vehicles exiting at the end of the day causing it to be a safety risk. Thank you for understanding.
Students driving to school should have a parking pass in your vehicle by the end of this week. Please see Mrs. Manning in the Main Office if you need to purchase one. The cost is $10 for the entire year.
Mr. Hale has agreed to help the Admin Team and will help supervise the Student Parking Lot at lunch times with the foot traffic as students go to their vehicles. As stated earlier, students may not go to and from the parking lot at any time during the school day, but it is easy to blend in with Dual Enrollment, Early College, and Online students coming and going. We have many students doing great things and want to celebrate that fact. Mr. Hale will be stopping you, possibly taking your name, and asking to see your digital schedule; you should consider him a staff member and respect him when asked or approached. Please be kind as he is volunteering to help and is always great with kids. He may move about the parking lot as well to monitor activity there too. We are excited to have him on board with us at AHS.
Food Deliveries to Campus
Non-school related personal deliveries for students from commercial businesses such as flower shops, bakeries, and food are strongly discouraged. All such deliveries are kept at the Main Office and not given to the student until the conclusion of the school day. Also, with guest not being allowed in the buildings, the delivery drivers bring a safety concern with COVID and tracing concerns. I have seen many deliveries in the past week as well as Mrs. Manning, and students need to refrain from ordering at this time. A student group can meet at some point and discuss options, but with our current rise in COVID cases restricting guests is important. I have some ideas for options and would like to have students be part of the discussion. If you are interested, please email me, and a group can meet before our next School Climate Meeting in October.
Mrs. Haugerud has balanced the lunch hours which has eased the number of students in all three lunches. There is no one going without food and all options are available; however the difficulty with some food is that deliveries are not happening for our kitchen crew in a timely fashion so please understand. They hope that this will change as companies are working to make supply demands a need for schools.
