Celebrations
On September 17, together with citizens across the US, we honor the anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution by delegates at the constitutional convention.
This important day in our nation’s history is a national day of observation of the birth of our government. In Social Studies classes you will reflect upon our nation’s rich history & development as a constitutional democracy. The constitution is the greatest governing document & at some 7,000 words it is one of the shortest governing documents in the world.
The constitution has guided our history by providing the American people with what they can reasonably expect from their government and by outlining the rights by which all Americans live in this great nation.

The Community is invited to the Alpena High School Auditorium for an informative presentation on Social Media, Sexting and Cyber-bullying presented by our local law enforcement partners on Wednesday, September18th at 6 PM.
As we discuss online safety we would like to encourage our families to discuss the dangers and difficulties of online safety.
Students should know that the single most effective preventative tool regarding school safety is if you See Something, Say Something. If your child sees or hears something that is concerning, they should say something to an adult or report it online using ok2say.com. On an annual basis the district and law enforcement are seeing messages shared repeatedly on social media, and often the same message is edited to replace the school name and then reshared again. When students or adults just repost messages on social media and don’t report through the appropriate channels, it perpetuates fear and creates additional safety issues. It diverts resources from the school and law enforcement, complicates investigations, and makes it challenging to share accurate information with parents in a timely manner, it makes us less safe. Please REPORT and don't REPOST.

Counseling Corner
September is SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS Month!
Studies show that is is important to have conversations about mental health and suicide prevention.
PAY ATTENTION for changes in behavior or entirely new behaviors. This is especially important if the new behaviors are related to a recent stressful event.
TAKE A PROACTIVE ROLE - talk about suicide and know the warning signs. Things you can do to help protect someone who may be at risk include: Help them find access to mental healthcare: your school counselor would have referrals for therapists. Limit access to lethal means (medicine, sharps, etc). CALL 988 for a confidential and free crisis line. Trained crisis counselors are available at this line 24/7/365.
DID YOU KNOW? More than 49,000 Americans died by suicide in 2022. Men die by suicide nearly 4 times more than women. 3.5 million made a plan for suicide. BE AWARE and TAKE ACTION.

Athletics
As the new year begins, Alpena Public Schools seeks to reinforce attendance expectations for all athletic events.
The district reminds our students, families and community that attendees have an obligation to behave in a manner that allows for safe and enjoyable experiences for all fans.
“Alpena High School Athletic Events are a source of pride for the district and community. We strongly encourage student, parent and community attendance and participation at sporting events. These are school events so we expect all those in attendance to demonstrate appropriate behavior and language that allows a family friendly positive viewing experience for all.” said Jon Studley, APS District Athletic Director.
Parents are reminded that any students in eighth grade or younger must be accompanied by their parent or guardian for admission to any Alpena High School sporting events.
The adult accompanying the student needs to be in attendance and monitor the behavior of their child for the duration of the event.
Attendees of any age that are disruptive are subject to ejection from any event.
“We encourage parents to talk to their children as well as model good sportsmanship and respectful behavior as a fan and spectator at all school sporting events,” said Jon Studley, APS District Former Athletic Director now Director of ACES Academy.

OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
