EMPOWERING 21ST CENTURY GRADUATES
Congratulations to the AHS Student Climate Team
Culturally Minded: Globally Aware- Sensitive to the variety of cultural expressions; Compassionate- Able to empathize with the feelings and priorities of others; Embrace Diversity- Willing to welcome and respect all differences.
Recently at AHS, a team of students coordinated with me to develop a student team to address the overall culture in the building and give a student voice to administration to help in developing ideas to make AHS a better place. The team would name themselves "The AHS Student Climate Team" and developed a working mission statement to help guide their future work at AHS: "Our mission is to create an environment where all students feel welcome and safe to embrace their differences while receiving their education." They quickly wanted to make an impact and developed a plan to go into elementary buildings to start the message that being kind is important and a message that needs to begin at an early age. They were welcomed by all the early grade levels where they read a book and held a discussion on why being kind is important. They provided an art activity to help support the message, and it was awesome! I look forward to what this new group is ready to do for AHS and APS as they plan for the end of the year and what next year's vision will hold. Congrats to all of them for taking a step to lead in a positive manner!
SENIORS- Important Time Sensitive Meeting

Counseling Corner: Be Aware: A young high school student in Michigan recently lost his life to suicide due to an extreme case of "Sextortion." Sextortion begins when a predator, often pretending to be a young girl, befriends a young person online. The internet "friend" then begins to pressure the young person to produce explicit images or videos. The perpetrator then puts pressure on the person to continue to provide images or money by threatening exposure to their friends, family and entire community.
Sextortion should never get to the point where someone loses their life, nor does it even need to happen at all. If you or your child are pressured for images, videos, or pictures, immediately tell a trusted adult---a parent, family friend, counselor or priest/pastor. Don't accept friend requests from someone you don't know or someone whose account seems fishy. Someone looking for information to create trouble may make a duplicate account using a current friend's name, even though you may already be friends with that person online.
Remember, anyone who has explicit photos can use that information to control another, so it is best never to give out that kind of information in the first place. You can report a situation to the Michigan State Police's OK2Say program to make an anonymous report. You can also call 911 at any time. Counselors at AHS and our School Success Worker, Bryan Robarge, are willing and able to help in these situations. Remember, no one is alone as a victim of sextortion, and there are always people available to listen and to help without judgement!
