EMPOWERING 21ST CENTURY GRADUATES
Congrats on your selection... Jenna Tolen!
Culturally Minded: Globally Aware - Sensitive to the variety of cultural expressions; Compassionate- Able to empathize with the feelings and priorities of others; Embrace Diversity - Willing to welcome and respect all differences.
Jenna worked in collaboration with the Student Climate Team to create a mural showing winter celebrations from around the world. This brightens the large commons at AHS. She spent time on her own researching, designing, and then producing this gorgeous snow globe. Thank you for sharing your talents with everyone at AHS!
Congratulations to all of our selections

COUNSELING CORNER:
Tips for Preparing for Finals Week:
Talk to your teachers if you need to turn in missing work or on the edge of passing to see how you might improve your grade.
Review your study guides and spend time during finals week reviewing your notes.
Get a good night's sleep the night before finals.
Eat a good breakfast the day of finals.
Keep a positive attitude and do your best! Good luck to each of you from your counselors!
Second Semester Student Schedules
Students will be able to view their Semester 2 schedules in Synergy starting Monday (1/16) at 8:00 am.
The Class Change Form will also be available at the same time. This can be found in the Counselor's Corner of the AHS Website. Please do not email your counselor regarding course changes. Also, please read the "Counselor's Corner" below for more information on appointments during finals.
If you have an open hour on your schedule or a class hour is doubled up, please report to E-house office during that hour on January 23rd. For any other schedule issues please use the Class Change Form to request a change to your schedule - please do not report to E-house office. It is much easier and efficient for the counseling team to process changes utilizing the form. You will be informed via email of any changes.
Electives will only be changed in extenuating circumstances. We put every effort into putting students into requested classes, but it is not always possible due to schedule conflicts, class sizes, etc.
All students are expected to attend advisory class. If you are in the building during advisory, you are expected to be present. If your college class meets during advisory, you will need to be sure to talk to Mrs. Tessmer in the attendance office to be coded properly, and you should be signing in and out.
If you are in the building during advisory time on the days your classes do not meet, the expectation is that you attend advisory class.
COUNSLEING APPOINTMENTS DURING FINAL EXAM HOURS WILL NOT BE SCHEDULED. IF YOU NEED TO SEE YOUR COUNSELOR ON THOSE DAYS YOU MAY ONLY COME TO SEE YOUR COUNSELOR AFTER YOUR FINAL EXAM IS COMPLETED, WITH A PASS FROM YOUR TEACHER.
IF YOU SEE AN ERROR ON YOUR SEMESTER 2 SCHEDULE YOU WILL NEED TO FILL OUT THE CLASS CHANGE REQUEST FORM.
When you hear the word truancy, do you automatically think about court?
The School Success Partnership Program believes that consistent school attendance is an important factor in making sure a child receives the best education possible. Since its inception, SSP has worked with school systems, law enforcement agencies, court systems and other agencies to address student attendance. As a result of this belief and community collaboration, SSP has developed and implemented a process to address attendance issues and reduce truancy in our community.
School Success and Truancy Intervention Liaisons are here to help families understand the Michigan Compulsory Attendance Law and support families in reducing barriers that they may be facing that are impacting their child’s attendance.
How can School Success and Truancy Intervention Liaisons can help:
Open lines of communication between families and schools
Provide connections to community resources
Problem solve situational absenteeism
Supports parents/guardians who struggle with insubordination in the home
Advocate for interventions to best support student needs
Provides support and incentives for academic improvement
Would your student benefit from this support? Please reach out to your school’s School Success or Truancy Intervention Liaison.
Call Jeana Bellanger, Truancy Intervention Liaison TBJH/AHS at 989-358-4831, for more information.
NEMCSA Adds a Behavior Tech at AHS!
This week we welcomed Mr. Rob Adams to our staff. He will be working in the Restorative Center supporting students with skill deficits based on attendance, academic success, and behavior.
He is originally from the Jackson area, but moved to Roger City in 2013. He attended Western Michigan University after serving 4.5 years active duty in the Army, stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His work experience includes the Department of Health and Human Services working with local and state law enforcement agencies, and workforce development working with returning citizens. We are excited to have him, and look forward to the support he will provide for the students of AHS.
Mrs. Samp will be meeting with students Tuesday and Wednesday to prepare for the new semester. Some things she will be assisting with are:
students paying for insurance ($30)
replacing lost chargers ($20)
getting devices back in student's hands
NO APPOINTMENT IS NEEDED! Just stop in.
Winterfest is coming. Winterfest is a privilege that we want all students to experience. However, to attend Winterfest festivities, students must be passing at least five courses and have good attendance. Those students who are failing three or more classes or are chronically absent in a class will not be eligible for Winterfest activities. Please take advantage of tutoring after school and talk to your teachers on how to improve your grades! Winterfest eligibility will be checked on 2/3/23.

After School Tutoring!
We are continuing to offer tutoring assistance after school for all AHS students! This will be staffed by AHS teachers and assistance can be provided in any subject. Tutoring sessions will be held in the Large Commons (Media Center is under construction) from 2:45 to 3:45pm every Monday and Wednesday that students have a full-day. Specific information for each week will be posted in student announcements. Students do not need to sign up in advance and students are responsible for their own transportation. Please contact Mr. Pattison @ (pattisonj@alpenaschools.com) if you have any questions.
OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
PEER MEDIATION
AHS now has trained student peer mediators to help solve conflicts between students! If you are in conflict with another student, please see me in Room E110 or you can e-mail me at robargeb@alpenaschools.com Remember, peer mediators are trained not to take sides or place blame on anyone.
