Special thanks go to Northland Area Federal Credit Union for providing hot dogs, pop, and chips for all students. Thank you Michigan Brown Trout Festival for the use of their bleachers around the fire, and thank you to Mr. Matt Poli for providing music on the stadium sound system. More surprises will be announced at the event, we hope to see you there!
This month's climate team mural celebrates Hispanic Heritage month. Read below for more information.
Hispanic Heritage month is a celebration of the history, culture and influences of Hispanic culture across the world. It is celebrated from September 15 to October 15. The date September 15 was chosen due to its cultural importance and impact marking the day of independence for Latin American countries. While we recognize Hispanic heritage culture, we can also recognize that this directly correlates to American Heritage. Hispanic heritage has influenced American culture tremendously. You can see it in the food we enjoy, the music we dance to, and those who help serve our country.
Some Latinx figures that have had tremendous influence in society are:
Lin Manuel Miranda - He is most known for writing Hamilton the musical. He has won several oscar and tony awards
Dolores Huerta - She is a Hispanic American civil rights activist, known for leading successful worker strikes and was awarded an Elenor Roosevelt award for Human Rights in 1989.
Ellen Ochoa - She is the first Hispanic-American woman to go to space.
Roberto Clemente- He is a Puerto Rican professional right fielder, who was the first Latinx player to be inducted into the hall of fame. He was an amazing representation for Latinx players all over the world.
Attendance
Attendance calls will begin on Monday; please plan to review any absences with your students on a daily basis and alert the Attendance Office with any concerns. Please remember ~ You can use ParentVue to report absences rather than calling.
The Attendance Office wants to remind students to check their Google Calendar regularly as passes for appointments are sent via calendar to be excused from class. Students should be checking email and calendar multiple times a day.
Students leaving and returning school for appointments need to make sure and sign in and out.
Welcome

My name is Jenny Taratuta and I am excited to serve APS as the new Advise MI- college adviser. I grew up in NE Michigan and returned to the area to raise my four children. My husband Tom is a proud 1989 graduate of Alpena, and I am from Hillman, where we currently reside and have children active in Hillman Schools. I have been a teacher over 30 years in various grades K-12, coached softball and basketball and these past 3 years worked as a Career Navigator for Hillman and Atlanta Schools. I recently retired from public schools and am excited to continue working with students in college/career readiness to help students understand their plus 1. I currently have a daughter, Andrea, in grad school for PT and a son, Nic, finishing his BA in education for HS Math. Both attend Central Michigan University, which is also my alma mater. Fire up Chips! My other two children are Julia, a HS senior and Trenton, HS junior. All these aspects help me realize the experiences and struggles students have in choosing their next path and I am excited to help the students of APS.
The Wildcat Branch - an extension of Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union is open for the 2022-2023 school year!
We are a student-run branch overseen by AAACU employee Alison Jakubcin
The branch is available to students and staff to withdraw or deposit money, open accounts, or perform other financial transactions just like you would at any of our office locations.
We are connected with other credit unions through a network called share branching. This means you don't have to be an AAACU member to use our branch to access your account.
We offer multiple cash member reward opportunities like a new membership reward, direct deposit reward, remote deposit capture rewards, and a graduation reward.
Stop by the Wildcat Branch to learn how we can help you or to open your account today or if you have questions feel free to email ajakubcin@aaacu.com for more information.
