EMPOWERING 21ST CENTURY GRADUATES
Devin Lamay~ Congratulations on your selection...
Confident: Self Aware- Able to identify their own strengths and weaknesses; Growth Mindset- Embrace their ability to grow through dedication and hard work; Grit- Willing to expend sustained effort to complete a task with excellence.
Devin was selected by Officer David as he sees the progress and growth in Devin as staff member. He was excited to share that he sees his super friendly attitude almost daily. I second that as well-- I have had a great opportunity to get to connect with Devin this year on different levels and can say that he is just a great kid and always appropriate in adult conversations at school; I like watching him interact with others where there is always laughter and smiles when he is around. I always say that he reminds me so much of his father Cliff whom I have known since he was a student. Recently, Devin has joined the AHS Student Climate Team to help make a difference in the overall culture at AHS. I look forward to seeing him work in that group and add his positive attitude to make a difference at AHS. Devin continue with the kindness and spreading a smile even when things are tough. We appreciate you, and you deserve recognition~ Congrats on being selected!
Juniors THANK YOU for your hard work and great behavior during the SAT, ACT this past week.
9th and 10th graders THANK YOU for your hard work last week on the PSAT 9 and PSAT 10.

A big step that will help with testing is to have students ensure that their devices are installed with the latest version and pass the readiness check prior to testing (at least a couple days prior so it gives us time to fix the issue).
I put together a quick guide on how to perform the device readiness check. Feel free to share this with your staff/students as you see fit. I strongly recommend that all students do this prior to testing.
Please restart your SCHOOL ISSSUED Chromebook before you go the AHS gym for testing.
ALL test MUST BE TAKEN on an APS Issued Chromebook.

Counselor Corner
Our voices are more powerful than we know. They can give support to a belief or clear up a misunderstanding. Voices can help guide people and keep them from making mistakes.
Your voice is yours! What you want to do or not do is your choice and yours alone. Do not allow yourself to feel pressured to do things that are not comfortable to you. When referring to Sexual Assault, Sexual Pressure and Sexual Harassment you need to realize that what you hear about everyone doing it is simply not true. You have your morals and standards; you need to live with those and not allow yourself to be pressured to change them. Anyone can be a victim of crimes related to sex and pressure; both males and females can and are victims. Some are the victims of males; others are the victims of females.
For your safety, avoid situations that can put you in danger of being pressured or assaulted, don't go to places alone or unsupervised, travel in groups of trusted friends. At a gathering, don't set down a beverage and pick it back up. In other words, don't put yourself in a situation where you can be pressured or accused of pressuring.
Where do you start with “finding your voice”? I suggest asking yourself a few questions.
What am I passionate about?
What are the things I’m scared to say?
Am I worried about what people will think?
Am I fearful that I won’t communicate my feelings well?
Am I worried that I don't have enough expertise?
Be Clear About Your Message, Your Values, and What You Stand For
Don’t Be Afraid to Draw a Line in the Sand
Speak up! Say no when you need to. Say "wait, give me a minute to think about this", if you aren't sure. Your voice is yours; use it to help you stick to your morals and standards.
Dual enrollment for next year is underway! If you plan on taking an ACC class during semester 1 of next year, you need to make an appointment to see your counselor soon!

After a great season, team 5505 has qualified for the FIRST Robotics World Championship held in Houston, TX. They participated in the State Championship this past week (April 13-16) and finished 17th of 40 after Qualification matches. 5505 was the first pick of the 6th alliance team. They were eliminated in quarter finals, being beaten by the new state finalists. They earned themselves enough points to qualify for the Championship (April 20-23) having to repack Sunday and leave for TX Monday April 18th.
DO YOU WANT TO HELP OFFSET COSTS?
There will be a donation link on the APS Web page on Monday morning to contribute. Additionally, there is a group of Alumni working to help raise funds. Watch for an Alumni donation challenge on Facebook. Donors can also stop into the Main Office and donate directly to our AHS Bookkeeper, Mrs. Jamisa Filipiak. She will issue you a receipt for your records.
We fortunately had parents work on Friday to arrange for transportation to Worlds and were on the phone with me until 11:30 pm Saturday making final travel arrangements to Houston. I want to note them personally (Shelly Boyk and Wendy Servia). I am also thankful to our former Robotics/Science Olympiad Coach Melissa Doubek for agreeing to go with the team to Houston for the week. What a crew! The team is in good hands with Chris Boyk and Nancy & Mike Jones as they work directly with the team. The team also had former teammates Hailey Boyk and Barrett Jones come this past weekend to volunteer (once a Wildcat always a Wildcat). It takes a village for certain to make everything happen and make it great for kids. Go CATS!TS!
Operating as a 501c3 nonprofit organization, The Sunset Project hopes to establish a community focused on fostering creative advancement in Northeast Michigan while also being a driving force for mental health awareness. TSP is set to serve the entirety of the Northeast Lower Peninsula, including Alpena, Alcona, Iosco, Ogemaw, Oscoda, Montmorency, and Presque Isle counties.
The Sunset Project focuses on individuals aged 16-23 seeking support for their creative passions, hobbies, and careers such as film, photography, graphic design, art, fashion, woodworking, creative writing, music, and more. TSP does not limit creative expression and encourages anyone with a passion for creating, no matter the outlet, to get involved.
While planning to deliver grants and host a variety of creative arts-based contests, The Sunset Project is also working towards developing programs and events to spread our underlying mental health awareness message. In its first year of operation, The Sunset Project is set to produce three main deliverables: A Creative Endeavors Grant, Arts-Based Competitions, and a School Mental Health Awareness Program.

Foreign Language Department Opportunity to Travel Abroad
Hi Alpena High School Families,
I just opened up extra spots on my upcoming trip to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and your student is invited to join us on a once-in-a-lifetime international travel experience with their peers in Summer 2023!
There is incredible growth that comes with seeing the world, exploring new places and experiencing new cultures - and I’m excited to bring that opportunity to your family and our community. You do not have to be in a German class to be able to go on this trip.
Please join my informational meeting to learn:
· How this opportunity will benefit your child
· Why now is the right time to start planning
· How your investment will be protected
· What we’ll see and experience on our trip
· How your child can earn academic credit
· How we’re keeping this safe and affordable
Our hybrid meeting will be held on April 28th at 6:30 PM - there are limited spots available so don’t miss your opportunity to reserve your seat. One parent must be in attendance.
So that I can alert you of any changes to this meeting, you must register using this link: https://bit.ly/3MJjyW6
If you can’t make the meeting but want more information? Register and select “No but send info.”
Can't wait to see you there!
Cheers,
Laurie Lemont

Specific information for each week will be posted in student announcements. Students do not need to sign up in advance and students are responsible for their own transportation. Please contact Mr. Pattison @ (pattisonj@alpenaschools.com) if you have any questions.
OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
