Senior Sunrise-- A New Tradition started by the class of 2022
A new tradition was started with this year's senior class. They planned and orchestrated a "Senior Sunrise" which should have taken place at Park Family Field; however the weather did not cooperate. It was outstanding the donations for food and supplies by parents with short notice. Fortunately, we had the tents set up for the dance and utilized them for a morning breakfast gathering senior photo opt as the sun rose. It was great!
Counselor Corner: Did you know that you must pass a class in order to earn credit in that class and move up a grade level? Each class is worth .5 credit, and you need to earn 22 credits to graduate. You will be held back into ninth grade, for example, if you do not earn 5.5 credits at the end of this year. If you are struggling in your classes currently, please reach out for help NOW! See your counselor or teacher for ideas regarding how to improve your grade. Here are some ways to make up credit if you need to, or to get ahead if you just want to advance:
You can earn .5 credit for 100 hours of Volunteer work through the Youth Volunteer Corps. Kat through the YVC has every day volunteer activities available after school, or you can work through a non-profit organization on your own, but you need to fill out a YVC application and have these hours approved: YVC membership form
You can purchase an online class through APS online program. See your counselor for details about setting this up. This must be an approved class.
Are you interested in becoming a tutor for other students? We especially need math tutors. See your counselor or email your counselor if you're interested. Paid positions may be available.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be filed by anyone who plans to attend college and receive any sort of grant or scholarship from the school, state and federal governments, as well as some outside institutions. “Filling out the FAFSA is a key step in preparing for education and career training after high school”, said Lee Fitzpatrick, the Early College Coordinator at Alpena Public Schools. “It’s important for students to know how they will pay for the education and training they need to pursue their career.” The FAFSA helps students maximize the amount of aid they can receive to help them pay for college. “Finishing FAFSA early and applying for colleges before November 1st gives you the best chance at admission and the most opportunity for scholarships”, said Fitzpatrick. Even if you don't plan on using loans, or think your student will qualify for grants, you will have to fill out the FAFSA to get access to any college financial aid plan, including work study. The FAFSA also unlocks student aid, grants and scholarships. college financial aid plan, including work study. Many scholarships are asking for an EFC (expected family contribution) number as part of their application, and most grants based on financial need will require the same information. Not all scholarships are need- based, but they may still ask for an EFC and you can only get that from completing the FAFSA.
Families can complete the FAFSA form at www.studentaid.gov If help is needed to complete the FAFSA contact Brianna Decker deckerb@alpenaschools.com or 989 359 5243
