As reported by Mrs. Seguin, TBJH Counselor: I would like to give a HUGE shout out to one of your students for demonstrating kindness and compassion yesterday on our half-day. TBJH had a situation where a 6th grade student got off of her bus at AHS and was “Stranded." Long story short, she messaged me on chat saying “Help!" She then said she got off of the bus and was at the high school and didn’t know what to do. I was able to get to AHS and find her. AHS student, Alexander Grubey, was with her when I found her. He was phenomenal! He somehow managed to calm her down, waited with her (30+minutes) until an adult arrived, and he used his phone to contact her parent. He deserves huge kudos!!! We are all very thankful for his kindness!
Alexander exemplifies what it means to truly be a Wildcat Way student. As we move to creating a positive culture at AHS, his act of kindness is what we want in all AHS students. I see positive changes at school everyday and this does my heart good to hear. Thank you Alexander!
As we move forward from the events last week that caused AHS and TBJH to be closed, The District would like these documents to be reviewed by all students and parents. I will read one of them during 1st hour on Monday emphasizing the penalties of making false threats and emphasizing that discussions related to violence are not a joking matter. Threats of any kind, real or fake will be dealt with to the fullest extent of school policy and legality. It is similar to yelling "Fire" in a filled theater-- it can lead to criminal charges and be life changing.

Will classrooms have open and productive discussion with students in a safe environment? Yes, and you can trust that it will be a productive and a safe zone to share student concerns and help to answer questions.
It is important to have discussion as a family at home for the need to report all suspicious and concerning behaviors and comments. We have emphasized this continually throughout the year and will continue to take place in our school community. As our positive school culture continues to grow, these reports will be second nature as all stakeholders have connection to the school community.
I will not be doing any drills over the next week due to the timing of this event and the tragedy in Oxford. It is just not the time to do so. I will be doing our next "Announced" Lockdown after we return from break, and it will be during the lunch hours. Again, it will be "Announced" and a great drill for a time when a portion of the student body is out and about in the building. I will have it in my weekly update under the "Upcoming Events," would would constitute a good discussion item at home.
Thank you all for your support this week and your diligence to discuss these two documents as a family. Students will be given both on Monday in advisory and expected to give them to you when they come home.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
Counselor's Corner: Do you ever feel harassed or bullied by other students at AHS, or do you know someone who is? Did you know that Counselors have a "Harassment Form" available in the Counseling Center and online? Just print off the attached form, or stop in the Counseling Center or any House Office for a hard copy. You are a valuable part of our AHS community! Be a part of the solution to make AHS a better place for all!
Here is the link to this form: Harassment form
Counselors or Administrators will follow up with each and every single referral made to us. We take every concern seriously, and we do not tolerate bullying or harassment in our school! You can keep the referral confidential so that the person won't know you were the one to file the report. There are many ways to deal with a report of harassment, including a direct approach, a restorative circle, a referral to an administrator including possible suspension, a mediation between involved parties, etc. We cannot address these concerns unless you tell us about them! Staff are always on the look out for potential problems; however, students are our eyes and ears in the hallways, on social media, and in the classroom, and we rely on your vigilance to stay attuned as to what is going on in our school. Another possible approach would be to email your counselor directly describing your concern or set an appointment with your counselor.

KAPUT Activity Night-- Stay tuned
In working with KAPUT, the team is working to create an activity of some sort and will communicate the plans. Thanks for your understanding and patience since the event Friday had to be cancelled. The community was so generous with donations of prizes that it was breath taking.
KAPUT is so lucky to be able to continue its activities because of the generosity of the Alpena County Youth and Recreation Millage, which manages the funds that drive KAPUT activity events.

Staff Bathrooms
Since the start of the year, teachers have had multiple incidents of students using the Staff Bathrooms in D, E and F Houses. The rooms are clearly marked as "Staff" and yet, it continues to happen. The bathrooms are not to be used by students as each house and in all areas of the building have clearly marked student restrooms-- please help with the student restrooms.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
