EMPOWERING 21ST CENTURY GRADUATES
Congratulations on your Selection Corban
CORBAN BURR
Confident: Corban is concerned and cares for his school. He believes in the community and a positive culture. He found vandalism in one of the boy's bathrooms and immediately acted to help in solving the problem. He was not afraid to step up and make a difference. Corban is the type of young person that is not afraid to talk to adults in the building and be difference maker. We appreciate you Corban and hope that others can follow suit and be as Self Aware as you were this week.
We recognized the AHS Special Education Department for the month of September in that they met the characteristic of CREATIVE. In a year that impacted many students, our SE Department did everything in their power to ensure students were successful by being ......

Restorative Updates & FAQs
What is a restorative conference? A restorative conference occurs when the student or party who caused harm participates in a conversation with the person or party who was harmed. Depending on the severity of the harm or behavior, this conversation is facilitated by the Dean of Student Supports or an Administrator in the Restorative Center. The goal is for the student to understand the impact of their behavior on the "victim" and other involved parties. By sharing of perspectives, students gain an understanding of this impact and then have the opportunity to repair the harm through positive actions. For example, a restorative conference may occur when a student steals a peer's earbuds. After sharing perspectives, the student can make things right by either returning the earbuds or purchasing a replacement.
What is a restorative conversation? A restorative conversation is a shorter version of a restorative conference. A teacher may speak to a student individually with the goal of understanding of why the student was doing something inappropriate in class and sharing with the student the impact of that behavior on the classroom instruction and environment. An example may include a teacher speaking privately with a student who was using a phone in class instead of participating in the learning activity. Through the conversation, the teacher may find out that there was a traumatic event that occurred where the student was concerned about a family member and communicating on the phone. The goal is to support the student in this example while also identifying appropriate times and locations for the student to communicate with the family.

Taking Care of Yourself; It's important
Did you know?: "80% of girls say they compare the way they look to other people on social media. If you want your child to grow up with high self-esteem and body confidence, there's a simple thing you can do: Accept and appreciate yourself and your body and convey positive messages to your child." KAPUT ~ Kids And Parents United Together
It is TIME! Let's make this the best year ever for our students.
Parents: KAPUT is a long standing tradition of giving back to help make AHS a place where students want to come. I have two senior parents that are willing to lead the group and put together great events for our students. We need to have the underclassmen parents join in on the planning so as to help carry on the tradition. We we will hold an organizational meeting on Tuesday, September 28th, @ 6:00 pm in room D211.
If you are are interested in volunteering, but are unable to make the meeting, you can email haugerudb@alpenaschools.com to be added the list. Please include your name, phone number and the name of your student.

Hello Wildcat parents, students, and staff! I would like to write a few lines, to introduce myself, and tell you I'm very excited to be coming to Alpena High School to offer another helping hand to Wildcat families!
My name is Chet Spencer and I was the first Alpena High School Liaison Officer to be introduced into the Alpena High School, in 1998. For the next Thirteen years, I served Wildcat families and we all worked through the fun times, challenges and accomplishments.
It was during this time; I learned the gratification that comes from helping students get better and more prepared for life's obstacles. I retired from police work in July 2020 but it is with great pride and excitement that I find myself being reintroduced into the school setting as an Up North Prevention Specialist.
Up North Prevention is an initiative through Catholic Humans Services that is aimed at helping individuals who struggle with life’s challenges. These challenges can be accompanied by substance use disorder or issues that lead to substance use, such as anxiety, depression, or isolated life occurrences that cause too much stress. A lot of times, a simple helping hand, at the very beginning of these issues, is all it takes to help an individual continue leading a healthy life.
In closing, I would like to say that I will be in the school, on a regular basis, and available to help students/families with whatever concerns they have. Please do not hesitate to stop by and talk. Even if it’s just about the weather! :)
Sincerely
Chet Spencer

PLEASE DISCUSS
Cell phone issues in many classes have become problematic in the past two weeks. Please review and speak to your teachers about your role in helping to make each classroom one that is free from Cell Phone misuse.
Parents, it is important to understand the policy and read it with your students. Staff needs your support for us to be effective in teaching digital citizenship. Cell phones can be tools and it vital to find the balance.
Thank you in advance.
