2024/25 Scheduling Process

This past week we started the scheduling process for the 2024/25 school year.  Students will have multiple opportunities to learn about course offerings and ask our school counselors questions over the next few weeks.  For more information please visit the AHS Scheduling webpage.  As there will be multiple opportunities for students to ask our counselors scheduling questions (see dates below), students should not be requesting Counselor Appointments for general scheduling questions.

Important Dates:

2/27-3/1: Counselors will be visiting Advisories to answer questions
2/29: Scheduling Informational Meeting - AHS Auditorium - 6:30pm
3/12-13: Counselors will be available in the Commons during all lunches to answer questions
3/15: Deadline for requesting classes in Synergy

Counseling Corner:  Seniors:   Here are 3 Difficult Conversations to have About College and Affording College:

Questions to Ask Yourself:  What do you want to do and does that profession require a degree?  What salary do you expect?  What major do you want to declare?

Questions to Ask Your Parents:  Be completely honest about your needs and have an honest conversation with your parents.  Set aside time to discuss the following:  College funds and willingness/capability to pay for school.  Limits to financial support.  Other means of support, such as living at home in college, books, and transportation.  If a parent can't provide support, understand that it doesn't mean that they don't support your goals and dreams, it just means money isn't something they're able to provide.  Parents can still assist wtih the FAFSA, and once you complete the FAFSA, you'll be ready for the final and most realistic conversation about what you can expect in the way of financial support and the broader picture about your financial aid.

Questions to Ask your Financial Aid Counselor:  Discuss the possibility of increases to your award package.  Discuss the availability of internal scholarships.  Discuss Federal Work-study and on-campus jobs.  Discuss special family circumstances such as unemployment or major medical procedures occurring with family members.

Counseling Corner, Part 2:  Seniors---Remember that this is "Scholarship Season" and that most of our scholarships have a deadline approaching very soon!  For example, the Community Foundation of Northeast Michigan has many scholarships available to local students and their deadline is March 1.  Go to cfnem.org for more information and to apply.

Do you need help with scholarships or with your FAFSA (Free application for Federal Student Aid)?  Melisa Smith is in the Media Center just to your left as you enter from the back (cafeteria lines) entrance to the Library Media Center.  Stop in at her desk to say hello and ask her which scholarships are current (there are a lot of them!).  In addition, Mrs. Smith can make an individual appointment with you and your parent to help you complete your FAFSA at a time that works best for you and your parent.
