2023-24 marks the 35th year Farm Bureau Insurance has sponsored the MHSAA’s Scholar-Athlete Award. Since the beginning of the sponsorship, Farm Bureau Insurance has awarded over $1,000,000 in Scholar-Athlete awards. This year, 32 $2,000 scholarships will be available to high school seniors who meet the eligibility requirements listed below.
Eligibility Requirements:
Enrollment - Student must be enrolled and participating in interscholastic athletics at an MHSAA member school.
Senior Status - Student must be a senior graduating during the 2022-23 school year.
Varsity Letter - Student must have prior to senior year won a varsity letter in a sport in which the MHSAA sponsors a postseason tournament.
3.50 GPA - Student must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. You may not round up a 3.4x grade point average for the purposes of qualifying.
Application Sections, Scoring & Helpful Hints:
Essay (40%): Be creative in telling the judges why sportsmanship is important to educational athletics. VERY IMPORTANT: the judges will be reading dozens of essays - make yours stand out! Tell the judges a personal story about sportsmanship; don't give them the Webster's definition of sportsmanship.
Extra-Curricular Activities Form (30%): Focus on significant leadership experiences and significant athletic achievements and academic awards won. Judges are looking for quality of experiences, not quantity of experiences.
Short-Answer Questions (20%): Use this space to tell us more about your experiences in high school sports and activities. These are not throw-away questions, consider them mini-essays
Letters of Recommendation (10%): Approach coaches, teachers, school administrators, youth group leaders or others in your community to have them write recommendation letters so the judges can learn a little bit more about you.
Please contact your Athletic Director for the Access Code to begin the application process.
This week we are shining a light on the Welding Technology and Health Occupations programs. As we approach week 5, there are a handful of tardy students 1st hour. There have been issues with buses and Friday fog; however, on Monday, Mrs. Tessmer will start assigning Lunch Detentions for tardies in the Attendance Office when students arrive. If a parent calls the tardy in as excused with an appropriate reason, Mrs. Tessmer will edit the detention and note it for the record. If being on time is a further issue, she will refer students who are chronically tardy to their principal/Dean who will communicate with parents.
Thanks for your help with this practice moving forward.
Testing Corner
Parental/Guardian Consent Form for the SAT Suite of Assessments are coming home this week. These consent forms allow for your student to opt into College Board's BigFuture School to review their scores. Students can also opt into Connections which is a free College Board application that allows students to connect with nonprofit universities, scholarship organizations, and nonprofit educational organizations.
Please return consent forms as soon as possible to your advisory teacher.
Students can practice full length SAT tests in College Board Bluebook. Students will first need to create an account. Be sure to use a non school account so students can access their scores after they graduate from AHS! APS student emails are disabled after graduation so a private email is essential if a student needs to reset a password.
This is the last week to sign up to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) which will be proctored on November 1st at AHS. Click here to sign up.

OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
PEER MEDIATION
AHS now has trained student peer mediators to help solve conflicts between students! If you are in conflict with another student, please see me in Room E110 or you can e-mail me at robargeb@alpenaschools.com Remember, peer mediators are trained not to take sides or place blame on anyone.
