Progress Reports
Parents -- Watch for reports on Tuesday and discuss them at home
This is a great time to talk to your student about the opportunity to do Reassessment in all classes. Here is the Reassessment policy that all teachers committed to at the start of the year, and you can find the specific class policy in your each class syllabus.
Policy
All students can retake each summative assessment once to improve their learning (except for final exams). Before reassessing, students must review and engage with the content through reflection or teacher support. Reassessments must be completed within department-set deadlines. This policy ensures fair, consistent opportunities for students to grow and succeed.
Goal of Progress Reports at AHS
The goal of the Progress Report plan is to build relationships with students and provide additional academic support while maintaining a positive connection with families.
Progress Reports two times per semester
Progress Report run at week 6 and week 12; it will align with the bi-weekly Athletic Progress reports; it works well with Parent/Teacher Conferences; student still has plenty of time to recover
Parents can discuss academic progress with students at home
AHS, in partnership with families, will assist in monitoring the academic progress of every student
Teachers will conference with students following the distribution of the progress reports when a student is in need of extra attention: i.e. F’s, students that moved from a B to D, or just someone that you believe could do better and needs a little extra chat
Distribute reports for 2nd hour students
Teachers will discreetly conference with students within 2 days
Dates:
Semester 1
6 week #1: September 29th
12 week #2: November 17th
16 week January 5th→ the teacher will decide whether a progress report goes home because all teachers review grades with all students to discuss where they stand for the final exam
Semester 2
6 week #1 February 9th
12 week #2 March 23rd
16 week May 11th→ the teacher will decide whether a progress report goes home because all teachers review grades with all students to discuss where they stand for the final exam

U.S. News and World Report ranked Alpena High School in the top 18% of high schools in the state and in the top 25% nationally. This occurs despite their ranking system changing to more heavily weighted speculative measures like college readiness scores while ignoring the concrete results that our students earned more than 3,000 college credits last year! “What better measure of college readiness exists than actual college achievement?”, said APS Communications Director Lee Fitzpatrick. You can read more about the rankings and report on Alpena High School here. U.S News has named Alpena High School to the list several times in the past and also awarded AHS for the tremendous volume of opportunities to earn college credit while still in high school. Despite Northeast Michigan’s struggles with the highest child poverty rates in Michigan and Alpena County being ranked in the bottom 10 counties in our state for overall poverty, Alpena Public Schools continues to shine at both the state and national levels for the ability to build pathways for students to overcome these daunting economic hurdles to reach their educational and career goals! “ Alpena High School has amazing opportunities available for students like dual enrollment, Alpena Early College, AP (Advanced Placement) and CTE (Career and Technical Education). We align closely with our partners at Alpena Community College to serve as a pathway toward economic growth and future prosperity for this region of the state”, said Fitzpatrick.

APS Adds New Advise Michigan College Advisor for Alpena High School and ACES Academy
A new college adviser is being welcomed next week at Alpena High School and ACES Academy, through Michigan College Access Network’s program called Advise MI. She is however a familiar face. Christi Schultz returns to Alpena High School with a strong track record of success working with students and families during the time she taught here. Schultz will work at helping more students navigate the process of pursuing training and education after high school. She will guide students and their families as they select where to go next, assist with applications and help with scholarships and financial aid. “This position has a great impact on our students and families as she will help to define career pathways and assist with both processes and roadblocks along the way”, said AdviseMI Site Supervisor Lee Fitzpatrick, “We are very lucky to have someone with the talent and experience that Christi Schultz brings to this position.”
Alpena High School and ACES Academy have been AdviseMI partner schools for 10 years. “We are thankful for our long term relationship with Michigan College Access Network and have benefitted from both their programs and grant opportunities as a district,” said Fitzpatrick. AdviseMI places college advisers to work alongside counselors and other school staff to support students as they make the transition from high school to postsecondary education and training.
Junior Minute Meetings
Counselors will be meeting with all Juniors from all 11th grade English Classes during periods 1-3 of September 30th and periods 4-6 on October 2nd. Counselors will be meeting one on one with students in the commons. During the lunch hours, counselors will meet with students in the E house Office.

OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
Student Climate Team will be trained to conduct peer mediation for students who are in conflict with one another. The goal of having peer mediation at AHS is to help create a more positive culture in our school where both sides win and one party doesn't feel as if they are being treated unfairly. Please see Mr. Robarge in Restorative Center (School Success) if you need help resolving an issue. Peer mediators don't take sides or place blame on anyone!
