EMPOWERING 21ST CENTURY GRADUATES
This month’s Wildcat Way is someone who put in an incredible amount of work over the summer and who has a positive, inviting presence in our building. Jared Phillips returned to work weeks before everyone else to work with students in the new weight room. Jared has a strong presence in our building and is well liked by both students and staff. He does a great job of fostering the Wildcat Way in students by building relationships and holding students accountable at a high level. He jumps in wherever possible and always has a positive attitude. Jared actively promotes our school’s mission and vision on a daily basis. Congratulations on receiving this year’s first staff Wildcat Way!

Counseling
⚠️⚠️Attention Freshmen! ⚠️⚠️
Counselors will be meeting with Freshmen the week of September 14th on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Tuesday during hours 1st-3rd, Freshmen will be coming out of their US History Class to meet with their counselor in the commons. On Wednesday, during hours 4th - 6th, Freshmen will leave their US History class to meet with the counselors in E house and the commons. Students should bring their chromebook.

Attendance Calls Home
Phone calls informing you of your student absences starts on Monday. In order to avoid these calls about your student absences, you will need to contact the Attendance Office at Alpena High School. If the call is not warranted, please contact Attendance to correct it.
For Tardy calls, if your student does receive a lunch detention, the teacher will schedule that with your student.
You can reach the Attendance Office by phone, email, the APS staff directory website, or ParentVUE. Please leave a note if the entire day is not excused.
A major goal for AHS this year is reducing chronic absenteeism so our students can reach their full potential. The first step is ensuring our data is exact, so our staff is taking extra measures to guarantee accurate attendance reporting every day. We believe that by working together, we can make a real difference!
National Honor Society News -- From Mrs. Dietz
Attention Junior and Senior Students: Emails have gone out to those students that qualified for National Honor Society. Check you email and know that you MUST attend one of the meetings.
If you did not get the email and believe that you qualify, see Mrs. Dietz before the end of the day Monday, September 14th.

Academic Probation for Parent Communications
To help keep our students on track for success, please review our school's Academic Probation policy: a student is placed on Academic Probation if they are failing more than two classes at any bi-weekly grade at any bi-weekly grade check or if they are chronically absent. While on Academic Probation, students are temporarily paused from participating in extracurricular activities, non-athletic contests, and school dances, and they may have their campus parking pass revoked until eligibility is restored at the next two-week grade check. To actively support their academic recovery, students on Academic Probation are assigned mandatory Homework Rescue during lunch. Attendance requirements also apply to event participation: students must arrive at school by second period on the day of an event, while students working through chronic absenteeism must demonstrate progress on an attendance action plan and receive administrative approval. Additionally, students enrolled in online courses must maintain weekly progress and staff communication to remain eligible, and students with a history of major discipline may be deemed ineligible by administration, with any pre-purchased event tickets refunded.

Check out our new Wildcat Way reward system! We appreciate the hard work of each and every Wildcat. At AHS we want to see students grow academically and in other ways as well. Our Wildcat Way encourages students to be confident, creative, collaborative, continuous learners, critical thinkers, contributors, and culturally minded community members. Our system not only teaches strategies to build those skills, but rewards growth in those areas.

Milo Dahleen from Alpena High School was named as a Semi-finalist by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced over 16,000 Semifinalists in the 72nd annual program, representing less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors. These seniors are competing for approximately 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth about $24 million.
To reach the Finalist level, Semifinalists must submit a detailed application detailing their academic record, school/community participation, leadership, employment, and honors. They must also receive a high school official's recommendation, write an essay, and earn confirming SAT or ACT scores.
We commend Milo Dahleen for this accomplishment and wish him luck in the next round!

No application, essays, or recommendation letters are required! All you have to do is upload your transcript and complete a Match profile that outlines your interests.
Additionally, students who complete and submit their profiles by Sept. 21 will be entered for a chance to receive a $5,000 scholarship award through the program. Don’t miss this opportunity to explore your college options and potentially earn additional support for your education!
Students are still able to complete a profile after Sept. 21, and institutions will send out admissions offers on a regular basis. In order to qualify for the $5,000 scholarship, students must submit their profile by Sept. 21.

OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
Student Climate Team will be trained to conduct peer mediation for students who are in conflict with one another. The goal of having peer mediation at AHS is to help create a more positive culture in our school where both sides win and one party doesn't feel as if they are being treated unfairly. Please see Mr. Robarge in Restorative Center (School Success) if you need help resolving an issue. Peer mediators don't take sides or place blame on anyone!
