Mental Health Tip of the Week!
Have you heard of cyclic breathing? When your body is in a state of heightened anxiety, it can be hard to get yourself to calm down. When we’re agitated and anxious, we don’t think at our fullest capacity. That can make it tough to handle all the different events happening in our day-to-day life.
Cyclic breathing helps us calm ourselves down and bring us back to a baseline. Follow these steps when feeling overwhelmed:
Inhale through your nose.
Take a second deeper breath through your nose and fully expand your lungs.
Slowly exhale all the air through your mouth.
Repeat for about five minutes.
If you notice your anxiety and mood slipping, these exercises can stop it from falling anymore. Do what you need to do to get back to your baseline!
⚠️⚠️Attention Sophomores! ⚠️⚠️
Counselors will be meeting with Sophomores the week of October 5th on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Tuesday during hours 4th-6th , Sophomores will be coming out of their World History class to meet with their counselor in the E House Office and the commons. On Wednesday, during hours 1st - 3rd, Sophomores will leave their World History class to meet with the counselors in the commons. Thursday and Friday will be make up days for students who were not able to meet earlier. Students should bring their chromebook. Before the conference...
Parent-teacher conferences are coming up! 10/29 & 10/30
During the Conference Check-In: Discover, Reflect, Grow
This document is designed to help students take a more active role in their parent-teacher conferences. It is especially effective for secondary students, who work with multiple teachers throughout the school day. Students can choose one question for each teacher, allowing them to gather meaningful and specific feedback from each of their teachers.
Before the conferences, students select the questions they would like their parent or guardian to ask. During each conference, the parent records the teacher’s response and brings the information back to the student. Afterward, students discuss the feedback with their parent or guardian, reflect on what they learned, and set a specific goal for the remainder of the school year.
This simple process turns conferences into more than a conversation between adults. It gives students a voice in the conference and an active role in the process, while creating an opportunity for students, families, and teachers to work together. It also helps secondary students recognize their strengths, identify areas for growth, and take ownership of their learning and goals.

OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
Student Climate Team will be trained to conduct peer mediation for students who are in conflict with one another. The goal of having peer mediation at AHS is to help create a more positive culture in our school where both sides win and one party doesn't feel as if they are being treated unfairly. Please see Mr. Robarge in Restorative Center (School Success) if you need help resolving an issue. Peer mediators don't take sides or place blame on anyone!
